A sergeant and negotiators spoke with the man over the phone for more than an hour to try and peacefully end the incident. Police said during that time, the man fired shots at SWAT officers on multiple occasions.
Columbus Police Sgt. Joe Albert said SWAT officers did not return fire at the time because they did not know where the suspect was located inside the home.
At 11:46 p.m., police said the man opened the door with the woman and a gun in his hand. The man raised the weapon and multiple SWAT personnel fired their weapons in response, striking him at least once. No officers were injured.
Police said the woman immediately ran to the officers and was not injured during the shooting.
The man was pronounced dead at 11:55 p.m. His identity has not been released.
The woman was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries from an assault that happened before officers arrived.
