Montgomery County Sheriff Rob Streck said store management had reported an person that they wanted out of the store around 8:09 a.m. This person was heavily covered with things including a face mask.

A third-party security guard contracted by Kroger approached the man and asked him to leave the store. At that point, Streck said the suspect produced a handgun.

The security then pulled their weapon and shot the suspect.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Streck said he was conscious at the hospital, but they were working to learn more about his injuries.
Been there done plenty of that back in the day. (not the shooting part, the part about management of a store saying they wanted someone out of the store) None of the people that I had to tell to leave were armed (that I knew of)

At most grocery stores today, if I see a uniformed security guard they are usually not armed with a firearm. I hope those guards never encounter a guy like in this story, or there is someone else in the store who IS armed with a gun.

The "face mask" comment is unclear. Was it the typical throwaway surgical mask, or something that covers all of the face, like what someone was wearing when they appeared to walk toward my car in Indy once?

Update: defendant pleads guilty to misdemeanor theft, gets 180 days in jail. :?:

It could be worse. At least the security guard wasn't arrested for defending himself from possible death or serious physical harm.

Hurtado entered the store and began stealing items, according to court documents.

A third-party security guard contracted by Kroger approached Hurtado, “at which time he became aggressive and made threats” toward the guard and another security guard. The guard asked him to leave the store.

“Hurtado then displayed a handgun towards the security guard as he was walking out of the store, at which time (the guard), who already had (their) firearm drawn, fired several shots and struck Hurtado,” court documents state.

The guard then rendered first aid until deputies and paramedics arrived.

Hurtado was booked in jail on Nov. 5 after being released from the hospital.
