Monroe cop shoots dog

Post by M-Quigley »

https://www.wcpo.com/news/local-news/bu ... glary-call

The Monroe Police Department said officers received a call just before 3:30 p.m. of a possible burglar climbing through a window at a home across the street from Monroe Primary School on Macready Drive.

When they approached the front door, police said a dog left the home and "charged one of the officers."

Police said the dog lunged at the officer, who shot the dog. Officials said the owner had to sign the dog over to the Butler County Dog Warden to be euthanized due to the extent of its injuries.

The Monroe officer was treated for a minor injury on his leg.

I don't know where to post this but every time I try to enter a posting (such as this one for example) it makes me sign in again, and then goes to a blank page. I have to copy what I wrote and the next time I get a blank page paste it and quickly hit preview or submit. This kind of glitch has happened before a long time ago but IDK what was done to fix it at the time.

They are more common than shooting people. In this case it sounds like the dog owned by the person who lived at the sight of the alleged burglary call.
The cop did have an injury, not that a person should have to wait to get bitten to respond (although some people actually think so  )

Someone I know who does deliveries was recently approached by an aggressive pit bull type dog and he pulled out a hand held stun gun type device. When it sparked and made a noise in front of the dogs face the dog quickly backed off. IDK what part scared the dog off, the electrical effect visually or the noise. The delivery service doesn't allow drivers to carry a gun, but they do allow stun guns and sprays.

yes yes, stuns & sprays, EVERYONE has seen the local US Postal delivery in the get-up, big bag, hat, and this time of year shorts. AND, a spray bottle hanging off the mail bag.

YES, they've had to use the spray, but being in a non-arrest mode, that is, LEO, they also carry doggie treats.

I would also point out they encounter doggies of all shapes & sizes, MORE than daily.
Acquisitions thus far:

-Slingshot
-Butter knife
-Soda straw and peas
-Sharpened pencil
-Newspaper roll
--water balloon (*diversionary*)

Yeah, I'm that good

3 Weeks ago my Son shot a Pitt that was always aggressive in this neighborhood. It charged him and he fired one round to the head, knocking him off his feet and ran away. They found it later and it had died.Stun gun and maze don't always work. My Son had seconds to react.

While I agree with the bolded, I suppose if you work someplace where you can't carry a gun, chemical sprays and stun guns are probably better than bare hands.

I've tried to search for results of stun gun use on dogs and can't find a verifiable story of a stun gun not working on a dog. Not to say it isn't out there, just couldn't find it. I have found dozens of stories and reports of stun guns either repelling a dog simply from the sparks and noise, or after contact, although that is extremely risky. The stories I've seen of contact incidents involved a dog biting someone else or another dog, and the owner of the stun gun touched the attacking dog in the neck or head to get the dog to release.

Last night NBC TV evening news had a story about a homeowner finding that a black bear had climbed into his house thru a window. When he yelled at the bear the bear growled at him. He started sparking a stun gun and the bear immediately ran away and jumped back thru the window to get out of the house. While that worked in that situation, what if it hadn't?

My concern is time. If I'm in a situation where I only have time to shoot or do some non lethal option, only one or the other, I would rather not waste time experimenting with non lethal devices. Fortunately the one and only time I was attacked by a large dog I had time to try a spray and it worked, and if it hadn't I still had time to shoot. In my one and only bear encounter, I didn't yell at the bear and he didn't growl at me or move toward me at all, just slowly walked away. Thankfully I had a pistol just in case, although I was told later if I had shot the bear the locals would've given me flak about it, as it was the only wild bear they had in the area, a local celebrity.

Here is the NBC story that I earlier referred to bears breaking into cars and houses and someone scared off a bear with a stun gun (there is video of him doing it) and another of a guy using a pellet or bb pistol to shoot several times at a black bear to scare it off. Although it worked, I wonder what would've happened if the bear would've instead just got mad at this and attacked? Did he have a real gun as a backup? The story doesn't say, nor does the video of it show that.
