IDK whether he should've been charged or not, not enough info in the news story, rest will come out at trial if it goes to a jury. Cases like this though might be a good reason for some kind of self defense insurance. Even if he wins, his defense is going to be pretty expensive, unless he gets a public defender. The person who got shot was not a stranger to the guy with the gun, the person charged went there to give him a ride somewhere and probably wasn't expecting any of this to happen. While there are witnesses it's unsure exactly what they saw and from what angle.
