Federal Premium 9mm 135gr HYDRA-SHOK JHP low recoil

Post by 18M_RWR »

I was at the range Friday with my new 9mm carry weapon and after putting 125 rounds of PMC 115gr FMJ ball ammo thru it I tried some different personal defense rounds.
I put 10 rounds of Sig Sauer 115gr & 124gr V-Crown JHP each and then 10 rounds of Federal Premium 135gr HYDRA-SHOK JHP low recoil thru it.
I found the Federal Premium 135gr HYDRA-SHOK JHP rounds were NOT accurate at all. To make sure it was the ammo and not me or the my carry weapon; I shot 10 rounds thru my full size 9mm. Probably a 12-14" pattern at 15Ft and I can put 5 rounds in 1.5" at 15Ft with my full size 9mm with any other ammo.

Has anyone else had a similar result/experience with Federal Premium 135gr HYDRA-SHOK JHP low recoil ammo?

I've never had the problem, but I stopped using Federal Hydra-Shok ammo a long time ago - it used to be some of the best SD ammo out there, but it is a couple generations behind in bullet technology these days. I generally use Federal HST 124 gr standard pressure or if I can't find that, Speer Gold Dot 124 grain standard pressure.

That sounds like some ammunition your gun really doesn't "like". Happens sometimes.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

I picked up one box each of a few different brands/loads to see if there was one in particular my new carry gun didn't like much. I guess I found it; just thought it strange that my full size didn't like it either. Since my range time on Friday I've been researching which 9mm SD loads perform the best to help narrow my next range tests to see how my carry gun like them.

Currently Federal 124gr HST and Hornady 115gr FTX CD are next on my list to try. These both seem to perform very well in the testing videos I have watched so far.

When looking at testing videos pay close attention to the gun they use. Ammunition can perform very differently in small barrels vs. large barrels. The Hornady Critical Defense is a good example. It's designed for smaller barrels (3" or less) and if used with larger guns, testing is likely to show less desirable results.

Thanks! Yes, I understand the longer the barrel the more muzzle velocity which will definitely effect the performance of the round. I have been purposely watching videos testing with a 3" barrel 9mm which matches my carry gun. The Hornady Critical Defense performed really well in a 3" barrel gun from what I've see so far.
