Opinions on storing my Desert Eagle.

Post by miker »

I recently purchased a Desert Eagle in Titanium gold. Now this is not going to be a everyday shooting pistol, so it sitting in its case for a month or two at a time without being handled will not be uncommon.

My question is is there certain precautions I should take when storing it?

As of now I lightly oiled the hole gun per magnum research exterior care instruction sheet. It is in the case it came with inside a zip lock bag with as much air taken out of it as possible.

Is this sufficient?

Here is a picture just because :D

I'll do you a solid...you can store it in my safe and I'll make sure no harm comes to it.

Seriously, though, I've had firearms sit for longer periods of time than a month or two without any real thought at "storing". (Years, of course, would change that outlook). I just put a light coat of oil on them and put them in the safe. As far as a zip lock bag, I've never done that. My fear would be that it might actually lock humidity in and make rust more likely, not less. But, like I said, properly oiled it should be just fine.

If you don't have a safe with a dehumidifier of some kind, (you really should have one you know...) then oiled and cased and regularly checked would be fine. If you want to do the plastic bag, then I'd absolutely add a couple desiccant packs to it.

Everythung said above is sound advice. I just want to put an emphasis on getting out of the ziplock bag if you don't have sufficient desiccant packs in with it. Unless you sealed it while in a zero humidity room you just trapped moisture in with it.

I just removed it after reading the comments. I do not have a safe with humidity control...yet. It is something I have looked into though. I could just wipe it down and lightly oil it every once in awhile when I clean my daily carry I guess it wouldn't hurt.

There is no need for "humidity control" in a gun safe if you don't have a humidity issue where the gun safe is located. Garage or crusty basement, or living near the ocean? Yes! Bedroom, home office, sitting proudly in your living room in Ohio? No!

Best storage for a handgun is sitting openly. Not openly like laying on the kitchen counter... but in a rack, in a gun safe, in a climated controlled room. A safe is not a sealed container until subjected to a house fire.

One of the worst things you can do for gun storage is a foam case of any kind. Shipment, transport? Absolutely. But not storage for days or weeks. The foam attracts moisture and subjects the firearm to thag moisture.

For the Deser Eagle... get a gun safe and put it in your living space, put the pistol on a gun rack. If you cannot invest the money it takes for a safe, get one of those sheetmetal locking gun cabinets.
I like to swap brass... and I'm looking for .32 H&R Mag, .327 Fed Mag, .380 Auto and 10mm. If you have some and would like to swap for something else, send me a note!

That yellow gold color is a TiN (Titanium Nitride) "finish" applied to the surface of the metal. It is a very hard, durable coating, typically found on drill bits. Also with anti-corrosive properties. Unless you have a rusting problem with other metal items in your house, I would not do anything special .

I really like the "bore stores" and an application of eezox for my storing needs.

Presumably you would include "your bedroom, living room or home office during Summertime in Ohio without AC" in your list of places that need humidity control for your safe?

I was thinking along the same lines. Leave it be. Putting oil or whatever will result in a wet, "soiled" appearance. I won't even put oil on my brushed stainless, and bead blasted firearms.

Hmmm...
You -- or me?
I tend to be pretty stingy with the electricity and A/C dollars. If it's 90+ out, then yeah, mine is running. 82-85? I'm sweating it out. Been keeping my prized handguns in gun safes since 1999. None of my stuff is rusted.

Oh, and I am not much for gun flipping. So they are free of rust NOT because I sell them after six months, lol. All of my first guns are still -my- guns... all are free of rust.

I can't tell if Sevens' profile photo firearm is rusted or just has a nice layer of "patina".

Oh, wait:
