Want to talk about IDPA, IPSC, or other competition events you are involved in
or are interested in participating in? Want to know if anyone is going to a local gun show? Wondering when the next OFCC event is? All that and more is in this section!
Went to Richwood yesterday for their IDPA match. I shot pretty well. One procedural on one stage and down 1 on another. The 3rd was all down zero. Did great for my second time.
But however, due to their running three stages in the one large pistol bay things were agonizingly slow. We could only safely run one stage at a time because of the proximity of the stages. So I think it took 3 times as long as it should have. We started about 10:00AM and ran 3 stages and I was done at 2:30pm. So, 4.5 hours to shoot 3 times. PCSI was just over 2.5 hours for 4 stages with separate pistol bays.
They are trying to figure out how to run 4 stages. I am not sure I can take all the standing around for 3 stages again, let alone 4,. But I had a good time anyway. I was just real tired when I got home from only 6 hours of post-work sleep and the hour and 15 min drive each way.
So many gun clubs were laid out before the handgun action oriented games were thought of. Obviously those three stages need to be run on separate shooting bays, which is a relatively new setup. Four and a half hours, what was the total round count? You're right, that's a lot of time to fire what, way less than 100 rounds?
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

It was set up for about 45 rounds. Other than the time it was well run. Makes sense about the pre-gun games designs.
We are very aware that the match ran longer then we had hoped. We are looking at some changes to help speed the match up. One issue we have at the moment is a shortage of certified safety officers. We do have plans of offering a class soon.
Thanks for coming to our first match of our season.

I appreciate you holding it! Had a good time despite the wind machine and clouds.
Same thing can happen even at clubs with multiple pistol bays. One bay will have an stage in it that has a lot of effort to reset (multiple moving targets, unusual start positions, etc.) or a huge turnout (95 shooters for a classifier). In the later case, I'm hoping it will self correct with other clubs adding bays and starting up an IDPA program! More clubs having matches on the same day, less people at each club even though more are shooting. I know that I'm already making decisions on where to shoot some weekends. Add in USPSA, Steel Challenge, etc. with the increased interest and I'm hoping for a lot more choices every weekend and hopefully more that are closer to home.
I do agree that many clubs range layouts were done without any plans for the practical pistol sports but more for bullseye and static range time. It will be interesting to see how many work on expanding or altering their ranges to handle it. I remember a club in Michigan that hosted U believe the 2010 Michigan IDPA State Championship had just added over half a dozen pistol bays. There were only half a dozen or so in each squad and I can remember only one bay that had 2 stages in it (both low round counts that went quickly) with all the others being in their own bay (unusual at a large match where I've found it normal for clubs to double up stages in each bay).
I do think it can be to the clubs advantage though. More people get interested in the club if it's close to them so possibly more members. Also, even with only 50 people a month, that can be $500+ more in revenue each month. If a club decides this is going to continue and takes a long view, the costs can pay for themselves in a few years.
