"Most gunowners never come to Camp Perry..."

Post by JU-87 »

Hi all
I overheard the following statement at the RRA hut on Commercial Row, Camp Perry,Ohio, during the National Matches in July,2013:

"Most gunowners never come to Camp Perry..."

The conversation was between 2 RRA employees. They were not "dissing" gunowners. They just stated an opinion based on there experiance running thier hut at the National Matches.

Sadly, I think they are right. Although I was born and raised here in northern Ohio, I attended the National Matches for the first time in 2010.
What years of missed opportunity!

I would like to encourage ALL OF YOU, especially those less than 1 1/2 hours driving distance, to attend the Small Arms Firing Schools (SAFS)

Just show up with safety glasses & earplugs and get coached by some of the BEST marksman on the planet! There is no better value for your training dollar.

Go. And take a kid with you. :)

CAUTION: Service Rifle can be addicting. I'm now hooked!

I've had a great time at the Nationals during the first week of high-power matches. I haven't made the pistol weeks yet, but one of these years.

They are right. Most gunowners do not stop there but those that do are hooked. I've been going there for about 30 years. Most gun people I talk to about it just assume that it's just for high power stuff and didn't want to go out there by themselves. I've taken many out there for their first time (another excuse to go out and look at gun stuff  ).

As for the SAFS and the CMP School, they are fun and a great way to get started in High Power. It helps give you an idea on what to expect in the pits and also shooting stages before you sign up for a match.

Most car owners don't go to Indy and most horse owners don't go to Churchill Downs, either.

And I do wish the pop matches would come back to Camp Perry.

Yeah you're right. Been to the Kentucky Derby and Indy 500 once each. Also once to the time trials before the 500.

Took me until about three years ago to visit Camp Perry, and darned if it wasn't an "off" week for most of the vendors, between big events. Took me a second and third try to get the timing right and hit a full vendors' row.

Also, about the biggest muzzleloader shoots in the world are held at Friendship in s.e. Indiana, about an hour from Cincy, and yet I know more local shooters who haven't visited than ones who have.

Same deal with the Grand American Trapshoot when it was held in Vandalia Ohio. Lots of shooting to see, big vendors' row. Too bad they moved that match to Illinois, it was worth a looksee.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

Never been, but on the short list this year. Applied for 03FFL, joined a club, and hope to be able to purchase an M1 Garand from CMP in next month or two. Hopefully next year I can enter! I've heard endless stories about how much fun it is!
Working on a Sig line. So far, I have a P250, a 938, and an Ultra!

I went with my father a few times when he was competing, but the two times that he won the National Match Senior Division were when I was in Germany and Viet Nam.

1989 was the first year I went to Camp Perry. My family tried about 4 years ago to get a whole big clan together for the rifle SAFS but sadly, we couldn't pull it off. In the most simple terms... shooting has gotten more popular. Mix that up with the dozens and dozens of classic Camp Perry huts that have been wiped out and torn down, there's just no where to stay if whatever event you hope to visit is during the National Matches. If you have a camper, you have a shot. Otherwise, just isn't happening.
I like to swap brass... and I'm looking for .32 H&R Mag, .327 Fed Mag, .380 Auto and 10mm. If you have some and would like to swap for something else, send me a note!

Most gun owners have probably never even heard of Camp Perry. I've never heard of it outside these forums and I still don't know what it is. Just assumed it was a gun range.

Camp Perry is an Ohio National Guard base located on Lake Erie east of Toledo. It has (or at least did have last time I checked) the largest outdoor rifle range in the world. Every year, it hosts the Civilian Marksmanship Program National Match competitions where some of the best of the best compete. For a number of years, my father was the commander of the Naval Pistol Team which competed in the National Match. He won the Senior Division in .45 in 1970 and 1972, both of which times I was unfortunately deployed overseas. There is also a CMP store there where you can purchase surplus M1 rifles if you qualify for the CMP through membership in an approved marksmanship organization.
