This is what the local PD ask me when i called them out.
Night before last i called the local PD out. One of the abandoned homes on my bloackwatch was found with the front door busted wide open.
No wanting to go in alone and confront anuone i called the PD.
Well in a jiffy (can ya believe this?) I got 3 cruisers there.
First cop ask me what all I had found and who owned the house. Gave him all the info. When the second cop showed up they both went in together to make sure the home was clear.Told me to wait outside. Not A problem! While they were inside the supervisor waited outside in his vehicle.
When they came back out, being and being an official encounter,I showed the first cop my CHL and told him I had a gun on my side.He told me," Not a problem" What the heck did you call us for then?"
Hey you guys are the police I just a blockwatch! I told him. He said but you carry a badge too! he says.
I told him I didn't want to go in and possible have to shoot someone if I am jumped. The 2nd cop said YEP! Let us do the shooting." lol
They were there for a while and I had the owners out the next day closing it up to prevent the local arsonist from getting in and setting a new fire.(We had another last Saturday about 8 houses down)
I really love these guys. They are so supporting of CHL carriers and know we can be trusted. Most of the College cops feel the same way. Always making sure I'm 'Cocked and locked" when I do my blockwalks.

I think that is the most ingenious idea to come down the pike in a long time.

A citizen's committe dedicated to protecting the community (block watch).

I think if we had those in every community crime would take a drastic nose-dive.

Same here. You know I love when people come together as well as experience contempt for overpolicing. Block Watch is the epitome of what I like to see people doing.

Still, I hope the cop was being comical when he said "so what did you call us for". You did the right thing.

I must watch too many cop shows, but given that same situation wouldn't most LEOs call for "back-up" themselves before entering a home like that? It's one thing to have to react to a sudden situation, but to throw yourself in harms way is a whole different subject.

I go into vacant homes a lot, mostly by opening locked doors, but it still gives me a major case of the creaps when I find the door unlocked. Especially when your in there and find back windows open, or the "Bilco" type door to the basement not secured.

I hope he was just kidding too, but I think you did the right thing...especially in some sections of Youngstown!!!

yeah I was at the range once discussing a similar scenario with my dad, and this really really obeese guy (we're talking like, almost as wide as tall) turned out to be a LEO. My and my dad had the same opinion "yeah let the cops go in and deal with it ". You should have heard the guy "yeah great, make us go in and deal with more crap", the look of this 5' tall 4' wide LEO complain about doing more work was priceless. He was actually upset about the potential to have to do more work.

BTW, neighborhood watch + CCW, seems like a great idea, alot safer than the flashlights most neighborhood watch people carry :)
