CHL from Erie County Sheriffs Office

Post by FireEMSPolice »

Ok on Wednesday, 2-1-06, I went to the Erie County Sheriffs Office to turn in my application and BMV photo. I met with Captain Steven D. Westcott. He is in charge of handling the CHL's. He was EXTREMELY professional. He digitally took my fingerprints and sent them to BCI. He took me back and took another picture of me with a digital camera. He then told me it would be 45 days or less until I get it but Erie County residents typically run 21 days on average and that he would be in touch. I was there for about 30 minutes and was on my way. VERY GREAT EXPERIENCE.

Tim, great to hear you had a good experience BUT, if it's takes 21 days, they are just slacking on the job! My son and daughter-in-law went to Franklin Cty in January. Turned in their application on Friday at 11:30, got the call Wednesday morning at 9:00 AM to come and get them. 2 1/2 business days....,not bad at all!

Franklin County and Erie County is like comparing apples to oranges it seems. Maybe they got the manpower down there. Only 2 people do it here, one of which is the Captain who does it full time and the other guy is there 1 or 2 days a week.

He's the guy I talked to that said that open carry was legal in ohio, but only with an unloaded gun, and not to even do that, even though it was legal.

He also said I couldn't have a pistol in the under the seat compartment of my motorcycle without a CHL.

I got my CHL in Hamilton County. My appointment was on 1-13-06, yes Friday the 13th, and got the call to pick them up on 1-20-06. There was also MLK birthday during that week also. I'd say a good job by Hamilton County.

Have you called / emailed them yet to check the status? When I emailed delaware, they notified me that it had been ready for some time, but she'd "forgotten" it....

Hamilton County took 8 total days (not business) to issue mine and that was back in Aug. '04 when the law was still pretty new.

I also did not disclose my SSN, which at first the guy had an issue with, but after reading the AG memo I had and calling a State agency, found out he could do it by entering all 0s.

Congratulations :!:

Columbiana County goes like this :

Take application to court house, pay fee, this can be done anytime during buisness hours mon. - fri. They tell you to go to sherriffs office in one week, mon. - fri. 8:00 am to 8:30 am

Go to sheriffs office 8:00 am to 8:30 am mon. - fri. one week later. get finger printed. They tell you to come back in one week, same time frame.

Go to sherriffs office one week later during affore mentioned time frame, they take picture, give you your license.

21 days minimum not including weekends, they are well within the alotted time frame to issue, and are as nice as they can be about it, but that 8:00 am to 8:30 am makes it hard on you if you work, or have kids to get on the bus.

I encourage you to send a note to Sheriff H about what a great job Donna does. I got CHL in 6 hours since I had a BCI check the day before for an adoption. I actually saw the Sheriff that evening at one of the sexual predator seminars he was doing and gave Donna a glowing review. She is awesome to work with and deserves the kudos.
