Notice by newspaper publication under Ohio law is an obsolete relic of another time. It is grossly overpriced and has long outlived its usefulness for its intended purpose. It persists only because it "seems fair."

Where I work, I have a lot of legislation that mandates notice in "A newspaper of general circulation." You're correct about it being expensive.
We always made a serious attempt to locate missing heirs in probate estates because of the publication costs for each step of the process if you couldn't find one or more. It could total several thousand dollars before you were done.

Back to the original topic, I received a phone call yesterday from an instructor and formerly very active OFCC coordinator/forumite. He had a former student who was renewing in Lucas county and was told that he had to provide a copy of his original training certificate in order to renew; the student no longer had his certificate and apparently they weren't going to renew him unless he got a copy or another certificate. It seems like the original license was not good enough for Lucas County and it appears, again, that they are making up their own rules. Said instructor was going to contact the sheriff's office to discuss and point them to the correct info. I wished him luck with that.

Might not hurt to include the county commissioners and auditor in the conversation. (if the auditor is straight up like the one here in Hamilton County, he could have a little sway with an "errant" sheriff since the auditor controls budgetary decisions throughout the county. That tactic worked when the sheriff down here was being difficult with regards to issuing licenses in an efficient manner several years back.) Also, folks having these problems should get hold of the Ohio AG's office. Isn't the guy who OFCC has a friendly relationship with still working there? Believe his name is John Fulkerson or something like that.

Or, we could have a big old open carry rally 'round the Sheriff's Department! Woo hoo! Gotta go sharpen my pitchfork and recondition my torches, it's been a while.

In Hamilton County, it's the Court Index Reporter which lists all of the court dockets at the county and municipal level and which is distributed among businesses and banks. The average person won't see it however unless he's in a courtroom.

To set up an appointment or an answer to this problem?

If you are talking about the problem, I'm just getting the runaround with the department. They keep saying they are waiting on a response from the AGs office. Therefore, I'm writing something up for them and going to send them an email and say I'm not looking for an answer, but they may want to advise one to their Sheriff or a lawsuit could incur.

Talking about the problem. Even the faq section on the website is about 7 years out of date. Take a look. It's either laziness, incompetence, or they simply don't care.

From the responses I have received, a little bit of everything. Their contact is supposedly on vacation this week. I give that a 49% truth rating, 51% she wanted a week break from me. If I was closer I'd go fire off in person to them.

I just looked at that. Marc Dann? LOL

Of course I'm not sure if I've ever seen one with Dewine on it. If there is one, I'll gladly submit to them a new file to post online.
