My father used to tell about his eldest son (my half brother) having to build a wood fire under the engine block of a Ford Model A one winter in North Dakota to get it warm enough to start. (lots o ground clearance under a Model A's engine)
I can remember when electric head bolt heaters were quite common around where we lived in Washington.
