The following appears to be a blog from the Vice Mayor of Amberly Village which mentions the parking options for nonresidents who wish to visit the park. It was written in 2012.

Do they have picnic tables there? I'm thinking maybe an OC Metro bus ride, followed by a picnic in the park.

Maybe then they'd take down their "no guns" signs.

I don't remember seeing a sit down area at that park. The clubhouse (remember, this used to be a golf course) was still there, appeared to be locked up. One side or another probably has a patio; I didn't really take much of a look around, the weather wasn't great that day.

I visited there earlier today, and am composing a note to the Village Manager.

When I sent a message to the village, they had a police officer call me back in regards to this, and besides what I posted about their reasoning for the sign, the reply said that the park was open to the public. They asked that anyone visiting the park stop at the village municipal building down the road and get a parking sticker, not restricted to residents of the village to get one. My thought is they want a reason to be able to ticket or tow anyone trying to go to a basically abandoned "park" for nefarious reasons and use that ordinance as a way to enforce it. Not saying it's right, but that's my assumption.

I just sent the following note to the village manager:

Mr. Lahrmer,

The posting of at least three “No guns” signs at Amberley Green park has come to my attention. (picture attached)

An acquaintance of mine contacted the village and received a return phone call from someone in your police department stating that essentially “Oh, we know that concealed and open carry are legal there, the signs are just meant to dissuade hunters”. But, rather than simply putting up “No hunting” or “No hunting or shooting” signs, the village has chosen another course.

You know, as a firearms instructor and gun-rights activist, if I had a dollar for each time I’ve read about or been told such things, I’d be a rich man. No, in my experience signage such as that at Amberley Green is usually posted to both dissuade the casual (but legal) gun carrier and/or to satisfy the anti-gun leanings of a person or persons in a position of influence. Such signage is deceitful, and in my opinion, illegal.

Certainly the village attorney knows that there is no language in the ORC “authorizing” me or any other legal gun carrier to carry a firearm(s) in the park, any more than there is language “authorizing” me to wear a pink shirt and lime green pants. No, the law generally disallows acts instead of positively authorizing them.

Regardless, the overriding reason I’m writing to you today is that intend to conduct an open-carry get-together at the park (whenever Spring finally arrives) in order to bring attention to your misleading and illegal signs. The media will of course be invited, as they have been to all events that I’ve organized. Such events usually consist of individuals openly and peacefully carrying sidearms, longarms or both, with time allotted for eating and socializing. Since the village has adopted discriminatory parking measures at the park, individuals would probably park on nearby streets such as Fairhaven Lane, Burning Tree Lane, Legacy Trace, or others in close proximity.

Because the village website has a dearth of e-mail addresses, I would appreciate it if you would pass on this note to whomever you designate as a liaison for me. If there is a legal objection to any part of what I’ve described, including parking locations, please have the liaison cite the relevant ORC section.

I received a phone call this morning from Lt. Blum of the Amberley Village police department. It was a cordial conversation which covered a few topics. He stated that the signs were being removed today. I asked that he summarize our conversation and e-mail me, and I would respond accordingly.

Here is his note to me:

Mr. Smith,

I am forwarding the following as a brief recap of our discussion today regarding signage posted at the “Amberley Green” park in Amberley Village. As stated the Amberley Village Police Department is very pro firearms and CCW for law abiding citizens. We have hosted numerous CCW classes. We see that the wording of the signage at the “Amberley Green” can be confusing for citizens that are not familiar with the law. As such we have had discussions with Village Officials and have asked that the signage be removed regarding firearms on the property. As for parking on the property, anyone whether they are a resident or non-resident of Amberley Village may use the park. If they wish to park on the property they simply need to stop in the Amberley Village Municipal Building a get a parking sticker which is free.

Better than I (I have a few friends in the department and didn't want to ruffle the feathers there), maybe I should have, but I am glad you were willing to take this by the horn and get it done. I live nowhere near the park, but am glad the the sticker issue is also being addressed. What if it is a Saturday or Sunday that someone wishes to use the park, and cannot get a sticker? It's a stupid idea.
