I so hate Hogue grips on revolvers, especially when KCs had the great Colt logo Pachmayrs.
I notice there is no sleeve for the box, which would have had the serial number?
And at least the seller resisted the temptation to buff it on a shoe polisher until it could be passed as Bright Stainless, like so many sellers have been doing because BSTS adds to the value- on factory BSTS guns.
It totally slays me seeing all the BSTS KC's sold with only the blue plastic box, or the first-issue cardboard box and styrofoam insert "But end flaps of box are missing"... (Because it's a repro box, and they tear off the end flap to prevent discovery of the missing serial number label and BSTS description!!!)
A 4" matte stainless KC was the first gun I ever bought when I turned 21, and I still have it...it was only $300....in 1991!

First off... GORGEOUS King Cobra. I love the way they look, especially a 6-inch.
I do actually have the original outer carton for mine... and to call it "flimsy" may be giving it too much credit. I will have to check, but IIRC, I do still have both end flaps but they are seriously barely hanging on. I mean, I do see your point but I can't imagine this is some kind of an epidemic. Hell, they already sell for big bucks -- seems risky to take what is already a moneymaker and alter it for the purpose of a scam... but I don't exactly follow the market on these.
And Evan, your $300 in '91, was that for a used King Cobra? Asking because I think my 686 cost me $320, and that was wholesale via friend of the family and kitchen table FFL... 1989. I would have figured the KC to cost a bit more.
I like to swap brass... and I'm looking for .32 H&R Mag, .327 Fed Mag, .380 Auto and 10mm. If you have some and would like to swap for something else, send me a note!

I recall buying a 686 Plus in about 95- early 96, and it was more than $320 but not a whole lot more. Colt wheelguns were not particularly expensive at that time, even the Python was reasonable.
Two Colts I passed up at the time, which are worth so much more today due to low production numbers :Anaconda in 45 Long Colt and Python Deerhunter (Matt black with scope, 6"). Because, let's face it, S&W makes a better shooting wheelgun, and I bought S&W instead.
I did buy a nice Colt 1911 back then, which has nicely appreciated too.

I still have the original invoice:
