As I watch the Katrina coverage I flash back to 1964 every so often. I'll be truethful in that my memories of it are as a youngster but seeing cars swallowed and streets on different levels , the fires, etc. I am reminded of the pictures in my mind from 64. I have no memories of anything but stories of folks pulling themselves up by the boot straps and going on with life in an environment that to me seems as though it would have been more harsh than the folks now down south face. Anybody remember this or have better recall of what all happened afterwards?? BTW it was the Alaskan earthquake and it lasted a full five minutes.

Willy -
Like you, I can say I remember it happening and can dredge up bits and pieces (fleetingly) remembered from the news (IIRC, primarily - at that time - WLWD Channel 2 which was an NBC station).
Total repeal of ALL firearms/weapons laws at the local, state and federal levels. Period. Wipe the slate clean.

They showed a bit of it on the History channel the other day. All I could think is where are the looters? The towns were destroyed and all the people were doing was saving each other. Not one big screen tv was saved :D

Different place. Different time. Different kind of people. I'll stop there.

I think people in general were different then. More self reliant and just more hardy in spirit. I can still see the images on the Philco and that little white dot when you turned it off too. We talked about it in school to the sounds of the janitor shoveling coal into the boiler to heat the building.
