Wish I had my Hi-Point

Post by Javelin Man »

I had an interesting (to me) situation a little bit ago. I was sitting down inside my barn with the lights off, and my 3 year old daughter was playing at the barn door on a tricycle. I looked up to see a car backing up on our road with the man looking right at my daughter. We live on a township road with rush hour meaning more than one car per half hour goes by.

I've wondered what would happen if someone would try to abduct one or both of my daughters at our farm, so I'm usually armed with my Kel-tec P11 covered with a long shirt. As he stared intently at my daughter, I tucked my flannel shirt behind my P11 and walked out of the dark shadows and started playing with my daughter. He immediately started driving off at a leisurely rate, still looking back. I'm sure he saw my pistol after a while because his speed increased quickly. That's where I wish I had my Hi-Point .45 so he could have seen that behemoth right away. I had just shot my new P1 (P38) a couple hours earlier. He could have driven by and been greeted by gunfire. (btw, that P1 kicks almost as hard as my P11 with more muzzle flip.)

The gold Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable was about 150 feet away so I had no chance at a license plate. Anybody that backs up on our road with an eye on my 3 year old daughter is going to be suspicious in my book.

That's a tough one to know how to play.

He could be a risk or he could be just the other, wondering why a kid was alone, if he couldn't see you.

You played it right, better safe than sorry.

OBTW, the P-38 is a VERY good pistol; more reliable than the Hi Point. You get more muzzle flip because of the absence of the slide up front.

Anyway, you probably know all that, but between you and me and the fence post, I'd sell the Hi-Point and by ammo for the Walther.

Yeah, you definitely did right. Kids are nothing to take chances with.

I hope he DID see the gun, if so and he was planning something, it gives him a whole nother reason than prison to re-consider.

Thank God you were out there, and not complacent as some folks might be living in the country like you do. I applaud you for taking time with your daughter. Not enough of that happens anymore.

You shoulda stayed out of sight awhile longer and let him get a little closer. That way maybe figure out his intentions and nail the SOB....but hindsight is 20/20 and I understand completely.

THAT really sounds hinky!

Might be time to catch a little of the "bug" that Petrovich and I have.

Time for a nice cheap centerfire rifle and some ammo to take up residence as the BARN RIFLE?

$$200.00 +/- would get you a nice surplus Mauser or Mosin-Nagant bolt rifle, a nice large can of ammo for it and a Stack-On cabinet to lock it up in in the barn.

How do you know I keep a firearm outside? :D I must have mentioned it!

Definately!! I always keep something handy I can get to outside. Well hidden of course and out of the reach of children.

I have mixed feelings about a rifle for self-defense. Not that I don't like rifles, I very much do, but unless you are attacked with a firearm you'll have a hard time explaining your actions as self-defense if you're using it from a distance.

Otherwise I'd probably prefer a lever-action or semi-auto over a surplus bolt action because they are much easier and faster to cycle. If it had to be surplus, I'd probably recommend the SKS for that reason.

I had a car pull up (and quickly pull away) on the dirt road on my property near Oak Hill the last time I went camping. I wished for a rifle for a short moment, but then I realized that for all practical purposes my Glock would suffice. The situation didn't look like it would result in an outright gunfight.

I seriously considered letting him make his move, but didn't want my daughter to get frightened in any way. I figured I would just let him know under no uncertain circumstances what was waiting for him if he acted upon improper impulses.

I have a Monsin-Nagent 91/30, but it's a pain to load. I prefer my Swiss K31. My SKS or AK could sit out in the barn and wait for my needing hands if need be.

I had called my wife at work to tell her what happened and she promised me an "attaboy" when she got home. :-) I must've been too far asleep. :-(

Javelin Man...

What u said...

About stashing a gun here or there.

That's really a good idea, if you can do it so the wrong people don't get a hold of it.

I think it was Jeff Cooper (correct me if wrong) that said the purpose of a handgun was to allow you to get to your rifle, or something to that effect.

I could put the rifle in my old mare's stall. When she was just a two year old, someone went into the fairgrounds at Attica and stole all the halters including the ones on the horses. Obviously they were familiar with horses to do that. All were stolen except for my filly's. She flattened her ears and they beat a hasty retreat. She hasn't changed in the past 12 years. She was a tough race horse.

It would probably be best to just keep the rifles in the house and grab the girls and run to the guns. Carry a handgun around the house, barn, and farm. I suppose I could rig a scabbord on my John Deere, but that might be going overboard. At least until I see another Gold Taurus.

Haspelbein; I have hunted deer and turkey just outside Oak hill, very nice area. The wife and I have been thinking of looking for property there too. Did you purchase from a friend, or through one of the local realtors?

Not to take the thread off-topic, but I used a broker (Countrytyme). But I also checked local listings in the area and other brokers. I've seen and heard a number of turkeys on my property. ;)
