Well, overall this had a reasonably satisfactory outcome, although things could have gone a bit better...

Police: Father Shoots, Kills Robber; Boy Hit By Stray Bullet

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police said a father trying to defend his family shot and killed a man who tried to rob the family in a car on the Westside before dawn on Saturday, but a 10-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet.

According to Channel 4's Melanie Lawson, a family was waiting in their car outside a McGirts Creek Regional Park at the corner of Checkmate Lane and 118th Street, hoping to be first in line to sign up for summer camp. When a 30-year-old man approached, armed with a shotgun, about 3 a.m., the father pulled a gun and shot the gunman.

One of the bullets ricocheted and struck Drebon. He is hospitalized in critical but stable condition at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.

The robber's name had not been released.

Glad the assailant died. Trying to terrorize a family with a shotgun. For shame!

Well, I'm not glad he died. I am glad the father successfully defended his family. I'm also glad my tax dollars won't be spent on this goblin's trial and incarceration. And I'm glad the father has immunity from any civil action by the goblin's family. I just really wish a stray round hadn't hit an innocent.

I'm sure there is a paper out there somewhere that will blame the victim on the Boy being shot then the actual BG who caused the situation in the first place.

Well you'll have to excuse me if I don't go bleeding heart, "human dead" over some guy I've never met, but that we know felt that terrorizing a family with a shotgun was okay.

On a side note, in your "half full/half empty" analogy, I see them both as inapplicable. We shoot to live

I never shoot anything intending to wound it, it is inhumane to do so, whether it is a man or a mouse. If a person chooses a course of action that puts them in the sights of a person justified to shoot them, only luck on their part will have them survive the encounter. Yes it is perfectly valid to stop employing lethal force if the asailent is totally disabled, otherwise the force is re-applied as needed to achieve that goal.

I'm glad that the father defended his family. Once more of us law abiding citizens do so with consequences similar to this situation then maybe more of the BGs will think twice about pulling stuff.

A 10-year-old boy remained in critical condition Sunday after he was wounded when his father shot and killed a robber at a Jacksonville park Saturday.

Drevon Ricks was at Shands Jacksonville after possibly being hit with a ricocheting bullet from his father's gun, police said. Jorrick Dwayne Landry, 29, pulled out a gun and shot the armed robber who walked up to the family of five as they sat in their vehicle waiting to enroll in a city parks program at McGirts Creek Park.

The family gave up their possessions to the robber but Landry's concern heightened when the assailant demanded the rear door of the Ford Expedition be opened. Landry grabbed his own gun and shot the robber, who died at the scene, police said.

Perhaps I should have explained myself better. I have no problem whatsoever with the goblin's demise. Ooops. Life is hard - life is harder if you're stupid. He was stupid. I'm just not glad. . .
