Know any public buildings in Ohio that allow carry?

Post by Brian D. »

Riffing on my thread about Kentucky having better firearms laws than us. Carry is allowed in most (non-federal) buildings in Kentucky. Even courthouses, excluding the courtrooms.

By comparison, other than restrooms at parks, fairgrounds, and roadside rest areas, Ohio and its political subdivisions don't allow it, even though the ORC says they can.

If you know FOR SURE of any village, city, township, county, or state buildings that DO greenlight carry, please list them here. Last place I read about was the Butler County Sheriff's office building, but only by employees with a CHL. Better than nothing, if it's still the case, but nothing like how Kentucky rolls.

Chime in please!

Likely to be a short thread. Not for lack of interest, but rather because no such place exists in the Lower 48

I'm allowed to carry into our local PD with permission from the Deputy Chief. I guess that really doesn't apply here.

Nothing much has change in my Champaign County. It will be interesting to see if the new Sheriff posts NO GUNS signs at the fair like the previous one did.

Years back we had a couple forum members from small, rural Ohio counties state that there were lockers for guns provided at their courthouses, when anyone was there for jury duty or other such business. I assume the lockers had been there previously, for office duty LE coming in to testify or whatever.

Trouble was, the people who posted about that were "hit and run" forum members, they didn't provide much background, then they dropped out.

I had to give up the auxiliary role when I became a clown. Our auxiliaries are not armed though.

Well, I guess that agreement/policy counts as something positive.

I got one more report, secondhand, from a former member here who still reads the forums. Green Township in western Hamilton County has unposted at least some of their buildings, and confirmed the change to him in written/electronic form, as I understand it. Again, better than nothing.

Actually, the Darke County fairgrounds does have a no guns sign on all their restrooms. :(

Your post is the exact opposite of what I was looking for here, Quigley Wiggly. You know that, right?

The fairgrounds violations will continue until a fairground board member gets hooked up with silver bracelets, perp walked in front of a judge, then thrown in the Graybar Hotel. Lawsuits and threats of same haven't worked.

When you say "no guns" signs, do you mean on the buildings or at the outside entrance to the fair? Allegedly the buildings might be technically legal IF the building is used for fair board meetings, but to put a no guns sign on the outside entrance is supposedly not legal. (not that some places seem to care) :( The "fair board meeting" stuff is probably what Darke county is using, but it would be interesting to have them explain when they ever had a fair board meeting in a building that consists of only a mens and ladies restroom. One year I saw a trailer on wheels with only a mens and ladies room,
and even it had a no guns sign on it. :( The only reason I go to the fair and haven't sued them yet is because I know someone at the fair who has a rv and they let me use their restroom.

Probably should have posted better. Buildings are not posted, lots of gun auctions and flea markets are done there. The entire fairgrounds are posted NO GUNS only during fair time week.

Yes, this scenario has played out multiple times across Ohio. The only tactic I've seen work well against it has been done best by BB62. He puts the fairgrounds people, sheriff, prosecutor etc. on notice that he'll be there, open carrying. Then he does just that, with an ally video recording what happens. They let him in and don't arrest him.

Groups of us have done more or less the same thing. But invariably, these fair boards crawfish and go back to violating the law and our rights in a year or two.

That's why I say some public officials need to get arrested and jailed over this, someplace, to teach others a collective lesson.
