DAYTON — Police issued a county-wide call for backup after a pit bull ran at them while chasing a suspect, according to Dayton Police Department Sergeant Zachary Banks.
Dayton police called out a Signal 99 in the 100 block of Valleycrest Drive around 6:40 p.m.
Banks said officers initially responded to a trespassing complaint at an abandoned property on the street.
Police found several squatters inside the building. One person ran away from police with a pit bull.
Banks said officers began chasing the suspect.
“Once they closed the gap, he released the dog and the dog came after the officers. Officers fired a couple of times at the dog, the dog was not hit,” Banks said.
The dog retreated after officers fired shots and the suspect ran into a nearby detached garage.
Banks said there was a woman inside the garage at the time. She didn’t know the suspect.
The suspect came out of the garage about 10 minutes later and was taken into custody.
Montgomery County ARC responded to the scene and took the dog, according to Banks.
“He’s facing a slew of charges at this point, including attempted felonious assault and possibly abduction.” Banks said.
No one was injured in this incident.

I'm not a police officer but a county wide backup call because a pit bull charges you? I mean, look... I don't want to be attacked by a pit bull either and shooting it (even though the officer missed) was definitely the right response.... but I am not thinking about this correctly that a county wide backup call was a little overkill for one pit bull? Am I missing something?

I'd like to believe that it was something less than a full scale countywide callup. Could be a misunderstanding between the media and whatever police spokesperson they spoke to. In my fire service days we had a tiered response system for different amounts of mutual aid.FormerNavy wrote: ↑Fri Mar 28, 2025 9:35 am I'm not a police officer but a county wide backup call because a pit bull charges you? Good thing they missed the dogs. Otherwise PETA would be claiming animal cruelty.
