Kentucky judge shot dead in chambers--by county sheriff?!

Post by Brian D. »

Shooting took place yesterday in Whitesburg, the county seat. Sheriff taken into custody without incident. I'll bet the town barber shop is hip deep in gossip today!

M-Q, feel free to pluck your magic twanger and post up a link to this story.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

Do I really need to, since this story has gone nationwide, on TV news and the internet. The CBS, NBC, ABC evening TV news, and CNN all mentioned the story, as well as a local TV affiliate in LA, and a news outlet in the UK. I wouldn't be surprised if other foreign outlets have covered it as well.
Ironically this story has gotten more coverage than all the other murders in the country, including some mass shootings.

No, I guess not. It's just that I normally only use my phone to communicate here, and copying, pasting, etc. is a challenge for my limited computer skills. Add that to the fact that it's a challenge to stay logged in to this site, I leave such tasks to the patient, computer-competent members like yourself.

I used to have the same problem, until I started checking the "remember me" box. Now when I try to log out, it doesn't want to let me.

Despite the couple of days that has passed, they're still trying to figure out a motive. One of his deputies was accused of something but not the Sheriff, and the Judge and the Sheriff were allegedly good friends and either planning on having lunch together that day, or had already had it before the shooting. (I read 2 different accounts)

I wish I could find the story but my internet searching ability is terrible unless you have very specific keywords or dates, but several years ago some young police officer in one of the northern states used a dept. issued rifle to shoot multiple people before he was stopped. Then of course there was the LEO out in California, who threatened to shoot some LAPD cops. The LAPD cops got so paranoid and trigger happy they shot and wounded 2 unarmed old ladies in the back in a parked vehicle thinking that the suspect was inside the vehicle. There are probably many examples but those are the 2 that come to mind at the moment.

Did I see it somewhere that the judge was messing with the deputy's daughter?

Probably, because at one point I saw that too. Other rumors swirling around as well.

By now, many locals are stating that the sheriff's daughter was not involved. This was allegedly the result of some misbehavior by the sheriff's lead deputy involving female suspects/detainees, after hours, in the judge's chambers. The question now is: Who knew about what, when, and, what were they doing about it? A lawsuit was pending over one incident.

They released the video of the shooting. I won't comment on the Sheriffs' grip.

What I wonder, if the motive was r/t this, was why the Sheriff would shoot the judge over some allegation merely against one of his deputies and not himself, and the judge so for allegedly not being personally involved in the alleged acts?

Regarding the lawsuit, that is probably affecting the Sheriff, but then agencies get sued all the time over the alleged actions of their employees, not usually a motive for murder. There is just a lot of unanswered questions at this time, which hopefully will eventually come out.

I find it hard to believe that a sheriff would shoot a judge like that, in his chambers, knowing he would obviously get caught.... over a dispute with one of his deputies. It sure seems like something else.

As a sort of off topic aside, if this had happened in Ohio, only the County Coroner would have been able to lawfully arrest the Sheriff on local/state charges. Just an interesting technicality in Ohio law. I suppose it provides a little balance of power. In the rare times it's happened, the Coroner was present but others did the silver bracelet/Mirandizing/perp walk duties, so I was told.

With federal charges, different story entirely.

Some details are starting to come out as to motive

As far as the judge having the sheriff's 17 yr old daughters phone # on his phone, I had heard a radio show where someone mentioned the daughter allegedly had some kind of part time job in the court system. IDK if that is correct or not, but if it is then it might explain why the judge had the phone #.
