If they're referring to a mass shooting, if you look at the history of mass shooters, many of them simply walk into the area where they are going to do the mass shooting without even bothering to conceal the gun or guns. A weapon detection device wouldn't stop them. People who want to mass murder other people don't care about violating a hospitals gun policy or any other place. The only thing that does stop them is someone actively stopping them, and the only thing these no guns for the law abiding, victim disarmament zones do is make the mass murderers job easier for them. Having armed security is better than nothing, but relying solely on one armed security guard or cop is not as good as armed citizens. There are some instances where one of the first people shot were uniformed security, like at the Topps supermarket. Dayton dropped their shot spotter program. One commentator claimed it was because it generated too many reports in the black areas of town, and while that was partially true, he left out other details when he commented.

Another analysis in Dayton by local radio station WYSO had similar findings, showing that fewer than 2 percent of ShotSpotter-initiated police deployments in the city ended with arrests, with just 5 percent of ShotSpotter calls resulted in police reporting incidents of crime—any crime, not just gun crimes.

Jacob Wourms, a Dayton resident and researcher with the police reform group Campaign Zero, told Bolts that ShotSpotter ratcheted up potentially dangerous police encounters in a predominantly Black area of the city. He recalled being on a police ride-along in west Dayton last summer when ShotSpotter alerts for gunshots began to ping on the officer’s phone. “We get to the location, and it was two little boys shooting off fireworks with their grandparents,” Wourms said. He was bothered by the seemingly needless encounter between the children, who were Black, and police, since such interactions can be detrimental.

Some Dayton residents living in the area where ShotSpotter microphones were deployed reported being harassed by police who were responding to a report of shots fired and feel the technology fueled racial profiling.

“[T]hey just start harassing him on the porch,” west Dayton resident Graham Moor told WYSO of his brother’s interaction with police in 2021. “I was fortunate enough that they left.”

If it's based on the technology I think it might be, it could indeed be very effective paired with a well-trained AI model. Time will tell if it indeed is. I wonder what it would make of the flashlight and leatherman I carry side-by-side on my left hip...

A number of years ago, I was accosted by the security guard at the Clermont County Social Security office for the flashlight in a case on my hip. He told me to go outside and take it off and put it in my car because it looked like a knife. He didn't care that it wasn't.

Since they obviously won't provide security for me, they should at least provide a weapons lockbox area at the hospital entrance for those of us who choose to be armed for the long walk from the parking lot or parking deck.

Try not to let the general public hear you say things like that. They'll call you paranoid and much worse. Fortunately I have a couple replies that involve reminding folks of the times I or others like me were correct, rather than overreactive. People have short memories about such things.

An example of that would be in the third "Die Hard" movie. By then, most everyone forgot how John McClain had saved the folks at Nakatome Tower. It's funny but not untrue.

The hospital in Newark put that system in last year. First time I went through the screening, I had a backpack with me. The system flagged me to be checked. Some receptionist asked me to step over to her desk area. I asked what the problem was. She told me about the scanning system and that she needed to see in my backpack to make sure there weren't any weapons. I only unzipped the rear compartment and made sure the bottom third was non-viewable. I had nothing with me, but wanted to see how much of a search they would do. I pointed to my iPad in the back section and said something like that it probably triggered your system. She did not search the entire compartment and did not look in the front compartment at all. She said they did that to make everyone safer from the mass shootings. She then asked if I felt safer. I responded that I would feel safer if she had a rifle and the training to use it. I told her that someone going to do a mass shooting would shoot out the windows in the doors and come right in - ignoring their scanners. I then went on to my appointment with my doc.

Well played with your reply to the receptionist. I've done the same when opportunities presented themselves. If OFCC gave awards I'd put you up for one.

Thing is, her bosses need to hear what you said, too. That's the hard part, complaining to the organ grinder, rather than the monkey, that the music is lousy.
