DG employee charged after shooting armed robber ?

Post by M-Quigley »

This is in Louisiana, I thought self defense was legal there but IDK the laws there. There has to be more to the story than what is currently being reported in the various links I've seen so far.

A customer got shot and wounded but it's not clear from the various links if the customer got hit by the robber or the clerk. Regardless, the customer didn't die, so that wouldn't explain the manslaughter charge. It also doesn't mention any charges related to the wounding of the customer.

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - A Monroe Dollar General store clerk has been arrested on a charge of manslaughter after shooting and killing an alleged armed robber, according to the Monroe Police Department.

Officers say they responded to Dollar General at 711 South 8th Street on Jan. 2, 2022, in reference to a shooting.

Arrest records say that there was an armed robbery at the store and the store clerk shot at the suspect. The suspect was shot along with another customer.

The armed robbery suspect was found outside of the store lying in the money he had allegedly taken. The suspect died from his injuries.

The customer who had been shot was treated at a hospital for injuries and later released.

The store clerk, Rafus Alexander, says he locked the store and left after the incident.

Alexander went to the Monroe Police Department and gave a statement.

MPD says that Alexander told them he was afraid the suspect was going to kill him when he pulled out a gun and robbed the store.

Alexander allegedly told MPD that he only shot at the suspect but did not know he hit him as the suspect continued running.

Officials say that Alexander told them this was the sixth armed robbery at the store since Aug.

We must be missing something. Interweb shows the area voting almost 2-1 Republican in the last Presidential election, so politically, it probably isn't exactly a California hellhole.

Probably didn't help the guy a lot that he apparently locked up the store without reporting the incident to police, but I still don't understand the manslaughter charge. If nothing else, take it to a grand jury and let them decide.

Hopefully details come out that will explain this. EDIT: Shot him in the back as he was running out, maybe ???!?

The clerk possibly shot the suspect in the back. The article says that the clerk shot at him, but didn't known he had hit the perp because "he continued running." Suggests maybe a back shoot.

The issue then isn't so much that he shot the perp in the back as it was that he shot while the perp was fleeing - that's considered not self defense in any state I'm aware of.

Well, it didn't take very long to inject race into this. Wasn't aware the DG clerk was black.

But given the lack of details available -- this author may have a point. Who can say ??? Maybe the DA just thought his claim of fear of injury/death was simply Bovine Scatology.....
