The Chicago suburb of Deerfield, Illinois, is giving residents 60 days to get rid of their “assault weapons” and “high capacity” magazines and empowering the police chief to confiscate them from those who refuse to give them up.
Deerfield previously allowed ownership of such firearms and magazines but had strict storage requirements in place for them. Now, the firearms and magazines will be illegal to posses in one’s home, even if properly stored.

The Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) and Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) filed a lawsuit against the Village of Deerfield Thursday morning, April 5, 2018, executive director Richard Pearson announced.
"This legal action is a challenge to the Defendant’s Ordinance O-18-06, passed on April 2, 2018, which bans assault weapons (used specifically as that term is defined in O-18-06) within the Defendant’s municipal limits," he wrote in the ISRA's weekly website report.
The suit was filed In the Circuit Court of the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit Lake County, Illinois, Chancery Division.
The group Guns Save Life - with the help of the National Rifle Association - is also suing Deerfield, WGN reported.
"Every law-abiding villager of Deerfield has the right to protect themselves, their homes, and their loved ones with the firearm that best suits their needs,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA-ILA, in a statement. “The National Rifle Association is pleased to assist Guns Save Life in defense of this freedom.”
SAF and NRA each supported FIX NICS which is fully anti-RKBA legislation...so it's nice to see them on the right side of this issue.
It is, however, not comforting to send them in as the tip of the legal spear. They are well versed in capitulation.
The NRA, indeed, takes credit for the creation of NICS, which is a complete and utter failure, based on the false premise that a database will keep us safe. That there can be a "Prohibited Person" class of citizen, and that we should take a person's freedom when they're outside a prison.

On June 12, 2018, a Lake County circuit judge issue an injunction, blocking Deerfield from implementing the “assault weapons” ban.
SAF founder and executive director Alan Gottlieb commented on the injunction, saying, “We moved swiftly to challenge this gun ban because it flew in the face of state law. The village tried to disguise its extremism as an amendment to an existing ordinance. The ordinance bans possession of legally-owned semi-auto firearms, with no exception for guns previously owned, or any provision for self-defense.”
Gottlieb added, “Worse, still, the ordinance also provided for confiscation and destruction of such firearms and their original capacity magazines. It was outrageous that the ban would levy fines of up to $1,000 a day against anyone who refused to turn in their gun and magazines or move them out of the village. This certainly puts the lie to claims by anti-gunners that ‘nobody is coming to take your guns.’”
