Holmes Co. requiring you to pay for a new chl card.

Well, well, the Holmes county sheriffs dept wants me to come in and pay for an updated chl card with my new address on it.

I told the fellow that all I was required to do was to notify them of my new address and that's what I was doing and that I wasn't going to pay for an updated card because I wasn't requited to do that.

I mentioned that my lic was up for renewal in may and he said to update the card with my new address then , if I didn't want to pay for a new card now, and I said that was fine with me. There wasn't any argument about it, although I expected one, but anyhow, it looks like they need some education on the issue.

The number for the Holmes Co. sheriffs dept. is 330-674-1936. They have a person that handles the chl stuff. I'm probably going to discuss the issue with them when I get my new lic in May , but I'm just to busy to deal with them now.

If anyone wants to make contact with them now, go for it. If anyone does, please let us know how it goes.

Call the sheriffs dept. that issued you "your current" lic , tell them who you are and your new address.

What they do, (or don't do), with the information is their business, but you've followed the law, so.....

Since it isn't required to have a new chl card they aren't required to replace it for free. Delaware said the same thing when i moved.

Permit holders are required to notify the issuing Sheriff of any address changes that occur once a Permit is issued. Address change requests must be made in writing with a photocopy of your permit attached. Requests may be mailed to The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office at 345 W. Second St., Attn: CCW Dayton, OH 45422. It is OPTIONAL, not required, to get a permit card reprinted after an address change. If you desire a new permit after an address change, the fee is $15 and the request must be made in person at 345 W. Second St. in Downtown Dayton. Replacement Permits may also be issued for lost, stolen, or damaged permits for a $15 fee. Those requests must also be made in person at 345 W. Second St. It is a felony to carry a firearm into the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office or any Montgomery County building.

Where are they (Montgomery County Sheriff) pulling this nonsense from that it must be in writing and that a photocopy of the current permit must be included? Unless they wish to supply the postage, a phone call satisfies the legal requirements.

Generally I abhor bureaucracy and fight to hold government agencies to the letter of the law, but I don't think this crosses the line. There is nothing unreasonable about their procedure. As with most busy offices, your chances of actually reaching the clerk tasked with processing CHL applications, renewals and such are pretty small in my experience. So, having you mail them a letter makes sense. And since they need to know whose records to update, some method of definitively determining that also makes sense, and a copy of the CHL is a pretty good way of achieving that. Finally, this provides a paper record of the change of address notification The fact that you have to spend $0.50 (or whatever a stamp costs these days) to follow their procedure is trivial. Shoot, I've recommended sending a letter with return address of the new address, certified mail, return receipt, and keeping the paperwork as proof of the notification.

Will they accept a phone call or will they try to claim you must follow their procedure?

It is not horrible but they need to reword it. All I MUST do is notify them. They can request that I submit that way or that they prefer it if I do. But, nothing says I must.

I've moved twice now with my CHL. I've only ever emailed the Deputy in charge of CHLs (although it was Wood County with my old CHL). Only once have I gotten a reply. I am about to move again in the coming weeks and will once again email Montgomery County Sheriffs Office and nothing more.
