light mount for shotgun

Post by Bama.45 »

I have a Mossberg 500 tactical persuader the 8 shot version with a heat shield. It is my home defense gun and I am looking for a light mount that will work with the heat shield. I could take the heat shield off, but really don't want to.
"Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home
Let me die in a pile of empty brass."
Amen

CAA makes/d a replacement fore-end for the 500s that has an m1913 rail on the bottom, so you can attach a light. It's not a stream-lined bit of kit (the removable side m1913 panels are awkward either way). But it works and is not too pricey. Add a Streamlight TLR series (or other) and you are in business.

I'd also suggest searching Brownells and Amazon.

If the Mossberg has a rail, or if you can add a barell-mount rail, the Safariland RLS works well. I have one on my Remington 870.

Will the Elzetta ZSM work? You've got some naked barrel and magazine tube in front of that heat-shield, right, Bama.45?

I really like the Surefire integrated forends, but they're pricey and rather heavy. The Insight L3 supposedly works with the heat-shield (https://www.google.com/search?q=insight ... p7nOTFM%3A" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), but the output leaves something to be desired, if your intended use covers longer distances than typical indoor room/hallway.

This thread on ARFCOM had some great ideas: https://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html ... 1&t=295601" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Be aware that for any light you choose to hang off of the barrel/magazine tube, you're going to be losing contact with the switchgear when you cycle the pump. This may or may not be desirable for you, based on your personal preferences. Switchgear changes can overcome this, with their own compromises to consider (i.e. constant-on, "slinky" wire to remote pad, etc.), as can mounting the light to the pump, as Mr.Glock noted.

If you prefer to have a light constant-on when shooting, remember the recoil of the shotgun and your manipulations will make it difficult - if not outright unlikely - that if you fit only a momentary pressure switch, that no matter how the light is placed, you may lose momentary contact with the switch during operation.

Yeah, I do have some naked barrel besides the plastic brace under the barrel that the front of the heat shield mounts to and it extends to the barrel mount. I guess I could trim that brace so the mount would fit.

I'm thinking of just a constant on switch, like on a standard handheld light... I don't need it to be really bright. I mean the effective range of 00buck is like 75 yds and I seriously doubt I'd be making that long of a shot anyways lol.. That's what my AR is for.

MWSY- I have looked at the fore ends with the lights in them. But, I don't really like the design of them.

Take a serious look at the Safariland. It's detachable and belt-clip-able, momentary or click-on, click-off. Pretty bright... I think it's plenty for use indoors, and it uses standard AAA batteries.

^ The Safariland unit *is* nice.

I haven't seen it in a shotgun role, but I've seen it in a low-light pistol class a few years ago. It worked very well and is every bit as waterproof as it says it is (there was a torrential downpour that night, one that would have made Noah suffer flashbacks, I'm sure!).

Remember, don't count completely on the lumens output figure. :)

First, different manufacturers may spec that differently.

Second, it only tells part of the story. These resources by Elzetta are actually very good at helping you understand what the most often quoted figures of lumens and candela mean, and how they translate real-world:

lol.. Yep, I knew about not counting on lume ratings.. Mine is pretty bright and cast a good beam.
