Secluded place to shoot outdoors in Akron area?

Post by CaliforniaReoil »

Hello!

I recently moved to Ohio from Southern California due to a job offer and am trying to make myself accustomed to any and all laws and the overall nature in regards to firearms within the buckeye state.

I enjoy target shooting as well as doing "Run-N-Gun" type scenarios which are modeled after IPSC/USPSA type drills but is more based on firearms familiarity and functionality and not so much a time-trial based scenario. In California, we had the availability to shoot on public lands administered by the BLM which allowed for target shooting, as well as the allowance of renting private ranges for the day that are anywhere from 50 yards up to 175 yards at one of my local shooting clubs that require you to reserve 2-3 months in advanced and is open to the public and does not require a membership, but they are available.

My problem with BLM land is that it became unsafe after certain times due to negligent shooters that just wanted to unload into the hills without checking their surroundings and causing ricochets and crossfires from time to time causing my day to end early.

I run these scenarios with a holstered sidearm and an AR15 and either run a drop leg carrier for my magazines on my left or a small chest carrier on my front. I'm looking for a location within driving distance of Akron/Tallmadge that allows for me to run these drills in seclusion without interruption from unsafe shooters or somewhere that I wont be disturbing anyone else.

I am open to all locations, public land or private shooting clubs, as long as it is an outdoor environment. I see that most shooting club memberships "require" that you participate in their membership events and such, which I cannot say that I would be able to attend due to my work schedule.

I appreciate any and all information that can be given on this topic, thank you all in advanced for your replies.

Most rifle clubs I am aware of (at least the ones near me) offer several membership types.
Working memberships which requires a min amount of work time per year, usually 8 hours, for a discounted membership rate.
Social memberships where you pay a higher rate, but are not required to put in any work time.
At least the 3 clubs I've been a member of around here all offer those options. Work time is usually pretty easy to obtain in one day.
None of the clubs have required attendance to any club functions outside of annual work time requirement.

From the list bellow I know that Mckinley and Alliance Rifle club are both outdoor venues. haven't been to any of the others yet. I'm sure you can sort through them for what you are looking for.

Thanks for doing the leg-work for me. This is exactly what I've been looking for. Google only helps so much. Thanks Bruenor!

Thank the NSSF for their awesome "Where to shoot" website. I believe they also have a "where to hunt" site.
