Rifle shooting at 200 yards-600 yards

Hi, all. I'm new to shooting any distance. I currently have a PSA AR, 16" barrel. Trigger is factory, maybe a 5lbs pull, my buddy polished it some, but it's still just the factory trigger. I've been doing ok at 200 yards with it. I just ordered a Nikon 4.5-18x mil dot Prostaff scope.

Is this an ok rifle to jump out to 600 yards with (Navy match)? I know it's not a precision AR rifle, it's a low end reliable AR, but will it at least get me on paper consistently? The black at 600 yards is 3ft diameter, i think. Or would a low end bolt-action be better, maybe like a Savage 223 or a Marlin XS7? Or would a 308 bolt be better? I forgot to mention, I'm on a budget! . Would adding a CMC trigger help? Timney triggers are NICE, so I've heard, but they cost the same price as a new low end bolt action Savage.

I can buy 69gr-77gr good BTHP ammo for the AR, if it's capable.

Please share your opinions and ideas, without scolding me. . Remember, I'm new to long guns at this distance. I'm used to plinking at 100-150 yards with my Wasr-10 . With good ammo, and no wind, I can keep all of my shots within the 8 ring with decent ammo, sometimes everything in the 9 ring on good days. I know, I suck and need more practice. LOL

Best way to find out is to go to the range and start working your way out from 100 to 600. No particular reason it can't shoot 600, but guns and shooters vary.

If it is a 1:9 barrel, you might try 62-69 gr loads. If 1:8 or 1:7, try the heavier loads. The 75/77 in 1:9 can get a little iffy in accuracy sometimes.

A nice Savage/Tikka/Ruger bolt action .308 would do it better at a reasonable price.

Define "ok".

At 200 yards, are you just barely keeping your shots on paper or are you getting two-inch groups (5 to 10 shot groups, not 3).

As suggested already, work your way back from 200 to 600. At 300 yards, you should be working with an 18" target.

Do you groups open up significantly when you move from 200 to 300? If so, try some different ammo.

The twist rate will help stabilize heavier bullets, but the 16" barrel length won't let you get as much velocity. A 62 to 69 grain boattail bullet would be a good place to start.

If your groups are good moving from 200 to 300, keep moving back.

A good start for the skills of a shooter is 4MOA with any rifle and ammo off the shelf. That will keep you on a man-sized (or deer-sized for the squeamish ) target out to 500 yards.

A 16" barreled AR should have no problem hitting a 24" target (or even better) all day at 600 yards... so long as the shooter is up the task.

Seems about right - Saturday after setting a good 50 yard zero on the Vortex Sparc on my 16" barrel AR I was able to hit an 8" steel plate at 300 yards pretty regularly (after I figured out the drop and holdover needed).

By pretty regularly, I mean that once I got it figured out I was able to hit 8 of 10 on one string and 9 of 10 on another. I was using one of those foregrips that deploy a bipod when you press a button but no rear bag - and now that I've got that zeroed I plan on spending some time working on positional shooting in preparation for an Appleseed event...

If you sight in at 100 yds, you should be on at 600 yds.Sighting in at 50 yds with an AR puts you good when the bullet drops at 300 yds...But there's a lot of factors that can affect a 600 yd shot that might not necessarily affect a 200 yd shot.
