Every summer they have the Small Arms Firing School for rifle and handgun as well as the CMP Highpower Clinics.

Highpower Clinics

During the mid-summer months when the National Matches are going, they have Commercial Row with many venders selling their products. On the link is a PDF file showing a list of the venders.

As someone else stated, they have a CMP Store which sells M1 Rifles, Carbines, Enfields, etc.

Daughter and I are seriously considering going to the rifle school. I saw tent camping is available. I can't figure out if food is available.

Is the school so popular that it is going to be hard to get into?

Ya know, it bugs me greatly that the .gov pays to advertise WIC, Obamaphones, ObamaCare, and all manner of stuff it shouldn't. The thing it ought to advertise, marksmanship and related safety, .gov doesn't. Backwards. Just backwards.

.gov shouldn't be advertising anything, IMO.

No. They take over 600 people.
Online registration begins, I believe, on April 1st, online. You will learn SO MUCH there, which is why I try to tell people about it. :) I took my older Bro this July. He's 57 years old. On the way home I asked him:
"Well, what did you think?"
He replied: "I learned more more about Rifle shooting in 4 hours than I thought I knew in 40 years of shooting..."

I have done "appleseed project" ( http://www.appleseedinfo.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ), and recommend that also, but this is BETTER.

If anyone here wants my AAR (after action report) for SAFS, just PM me.

I haven't attended a SAFS since 2005 so I'm sure a number of things have changed at Camp Perry. Back then, the mess hall was open for food at normal (military) meal times. The food wasn't bad, cafeteria style and extremely low in price. There was also a "snack bar" on base right next to the PX and this place was like a little greasy spoon restaurant. Not a wide menu, but lotsa deep-fried and typical small restaurant fare, loud music blaring and lots of commotion and a very relaxed (almost party) kind of atmosphere.

Beyond that, you're merely a mile or two out of Port Clinton and there are dozens of eating options in town. Especially if you think you might tent camp (very low in cost$ ) just plan it as if you were having a weekend out of town and your budget will not take a hit.

Well, unless you burn a wad on Commercial Row or at the CMP store.

Those who enjoy fishing (?!) should bring a rod & such, always folks fishing off the pier that juts in to Lake Erie. You better have a valid fishing license, though.

I've had GREAT times at Camp Perry.

During Nationals, civilians getting a camping spot in the RV park is zippo. We camp at East Harbor State Park, about 20-30 minutes East.
Jolly Roger's seafood place in Port Clinton is great. They had on their sign out front: "Welcome Shooters" That was good enough for me.

The more I learn about Camp Perry, the more I kick myself for not going there. I plan on changing that soon.
People say firearm owners are compensating for something.
I am compensating for being smaller and weaker than most criminals.

I have been to Camp Perry once and I will probably never set foot there again for any competition. To enter the Springfield M1A match, I was required to fill out a tax form(forget which one exactly), complete with SSN. To boot, Springfield was requesting that the rifle's serial number be entered on the score card.

The match was for prize money. Now, I fully understand possibly needing to fill out forms and show that my rifle was a true Springfield if I won, but to require everyone to fill one out? BS. I saw several people storm off at the registration tables, refusing to do so. I would have not shot either but my father was with me as it was a father/son outing. I asked the fella at the registration table what the purpose was. He stated that it was Camp Perry policy to require forms for any purse matches.

Whether he was uninformed, misled, or that is policy... I shall never return again unless something changes. Such actions should not ever be condoned by a major firearms manufacturer nor the largest 2nd Amendment advocacy organization in the country.

Treat the skunks with respect at East Harbor. They usually won't bother you if you don't bother them.

I have camped in a tent in the campground and in a trailer during nationals so it is not impossible for civilians to get a spot. I also have stayed in a hut and stayed in a hotel once about 20 mile away. Register for the SAFS and any matches you want to shoot and then pay attention to when registration opens for the various lodging units; lodging registration opens at different times. As long as you get registered early you can get a spot. The last time I stayed in one of the POW huts, just rented a single spot for $10/night; there are 4 spots in a hut.

Shoot the other matches without purses. To each his own, but it is a good program and a great opportunity for learning and competing. I jumped in with both feet the first time I went: SAFS and EIC match on Sat. and Sun. and President's match on Monday and I had never shot my AR past 200 yards until I went to Perry. I didn't win and didn't expect to, but I didn't embarrass myself and learned a lot.

Mustang,
I have gone twice. 2011 and 2012. I plan on going in 2014. I am lucky and my grandfather in-law lives two miles from Camp perry, but there might be places to stay in Port Clinton. The class is easy to get into all you have to do is pay the fee. I want to say that registration opens in early April and the event is normally the last weekend in July. You have to be there on Friday to register and on Saturday they have a class that goes over the course of fire, range rules, and safety rules. Saturday afternoon they do a mock match with the rifles that they provide so you can zero it in and get use to the rifle. The competition is on Sunday and goes all day. Commercial row is nice they have some good deals on parts. In 2012 I took a video of me competing so you can get to know the course of fire. Feel free to ask me any questions.
