For this show Stryker made up some sheets for people to sign up for our email alerts.
This is a new idea we stole from BFA, and out sheets look much better with the OFCC logo on it than their plain old ugly ones do
When we work the crowd we tell them we won't spam your inbox once or twice a week whether something is happening or not, but we will try to send out notices on legislative hearings and rallies/counter rallies is we can.
The point is, we only email when something is happening , not because it's Tuesday
The way we stress activism and advocacy, the ones who sign up say they want to help out at these events.
I think that we need another, smaller banner type sign that says
Fighting for Gun Rights or something similar.
There were empty tables to the right of us so MWSY laid out pages from some book called "The Anti Gun Debate Guide" or something like that. They had large type with only a couple sentences or so in quotation clouds like in a comic strip.
"When confronted with irrefutable statistics on crime" call them rednecks and knuckle draggers"
"Say they just want to play Wyatt Earp and kids deserve to grow up unafraid""
Quite a few people would read those while walking by and laugh, literally stoop and laugh, and MWSY would start conversing with them.
Stryker used his cell phone to set up a "mi-fi" network and MWSY logged his laptop into it and we could search up the law to answer specific questions, and he made a screen saver with some interesting pictures on it. One had my current avatar from face book on it, with my mustache dyed hot pink and the "I'm the NRA" logo under my face.
THAT got some attention.
It was quite different for me to see Mr Magoo, Gary, wearing blue jeans and looking like a regular guy,
I usually only see him in more formal settings, like the Statehouse or someone's office and we're on our best behavior.
Not always true at a gun show
It was Shortland's first show. He is energetic and eager to take part.
Thanks for coming, David!
And we had Princess,,,
Princess organized the counter protest to the antis on protested at the Statehouse last week
She was debating them on face book and said they were too stupid to have discussions with and too inflammatory to go unopposed on the Statehouse lawn, so she set up this face book "event" and started sharing it with people who shared it until it got to us. there's a thread on it
here, and livelier discussions on the rallies
here and
here
Princess is 21 years old, smart, attractive, and articulate. She does her homework and stands toe to toe with the antis armed with facts, a smile, and cool temper. As such, she can relate to the antis on a level we salty old white guys can't.
She had such a good time with us Down at the Statehouse when she came by at the gun show she bought a membership, put on a volunteer pin, and started working the crowd.
I saw her get two guys who were walking out the exit to come clear back to our table to sign up for the emails before they went home.
I expect her to join the forums once she gets her membership number, but face book is her favorite media to communicate/advocate.
We need these young people, with their energy and eagerness, as advocates for our cause
I could only work this show on Saturday due to previous commitment, and Stryker74 is going to be in charge of them for a while, maybe forever. I'll still be working them, but he is going to be the "go to" guy
I think we have a real good team going, but that doesn't mean we couldn't use some more help, everyone is welcome,,,,
