Where to go for RSO Training?

Post by rradenheimer »

I live in the Dayton area, and am looking to take the Range Safety Officers Course, and possibly some instructors courses. I was wondering if anyone had any information on reputable trainers in the area.

FYI: The RSO course can be a home study course if you're already an instructor.

I do not hold an instructor's certificate. I have taken the NRA Basic Pistol course and that is all. Most of my training came from the BoyScouts of America when I was younger. I took and received badges for courses in Rifle, Shotgun, and Muzzle Loading. I am looking to contribute some of my time back to the BSA organization in the form of a training counselor for merit badges, or even a RSO for summer camps. Also I would like to have the ability to help out local ranges, or gun clubs that could use a certified RSO, it could help with liability I heard. Looking for the best options for the Dayton area.

I believe, but may be incorrect, you must hold a valid NRA Firearms Instructor certification before going down the path to RSO certification.

Q: How does one become a certified NRA Range Safety Officer?
A:
1.) Individuals who currently possess a valid NRA Firearms Instructor certification or NRA Coach appointment in one of the NRA’s firearms training programs have the option of taking the Range Safety Officer course by home validation.

2.)Those individuals who do not hold a trainer rating must attend a Range Safety Officer course. Range Safety Officer courses are conducted by Chief Range Safety Officers. (“Chief Range Safety Officers” are those individuals certified to train NRA Range Safety Officers.) The Range Safety Officer course is a nine-hour course that consists of classroom time and practical exercises conducted on a range. Range Safety Officer candidates will receive the Range Safety Officer Student Packet.

You should be able to take the NRA RSO class with your background. In general, you should be experienced, but not necessarily an instructor.

Here is a link to a search for NRA classes-http://www.nrainstructors.org/searchcourse.aspx. Just select the course you want. You are in luck. There is a class in Dayton on May 19.

John at Mad Duck comes to mind. He's not around the corner from you, but he's not all that far.

Contact Tecumseh Council at Springfield. We do instructor training at Camp Birch, which is just north of Yellow Springs, where our interest is in training instructors for the Boy Scouting shooting program. In a year's time, we'll do RSO, Shotgun Instructor, Rifle Instructor and Pistol Instructor. We try not to take business from the commercial trainers by training the general public, so we want people that have expressed an interest in working with youth. For those not interested in working with the Boy Scouts, Mad Duck training is outstanding.
