Rifle Range Near Me?

Post by MrKitty »

Hey guys! Pretty new to the forums here so please forgive me if this is in the wrong category.

I am wondering does anyone know of a rifle range up near the Youngstown, OH area? (South Side of Youngstown doesn't count! xD) Really want to start practicing more regularly with my rifles but unfortunately the local ranges I visit are for pistol calibers only. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated! =)

Thanks guys!

Grand River in West Farmington, (DNR). A&A in Garretsville. Both are close to Youngstown.

I have been seriously debating a rifle purchase.
Does anyone know of a range in or near Lorain?
To me there is not much point in owning a rifle if I can not practice with it.

Thanks for any info. :)

I've seen Grand River on ODNR before and printed out the map last year... I wasn't too confident I knew how to go about getting a license to go. Be gentle, I'm a newbie =(

I also seen Stonewall up in Cleveland, but they won't allow FMJ rounds, only like lead nose. All of my ammo is FMJ so that's out.

For Grand River, simply go to anyplace you can buy fishing, or hunting licenses (Walmart, Kmart), and tell them you want a "Class A Range Permit". It's $24 for the annual, and $5 for the one day permit. If you have the map to get there I won't bother with directions. Besides, I have never came into the range from that direction, so I may not be able to give you the best directions, I usually come in from the Cleveland area.

You can get to A&A in Garretsville off of US422. They have a 100yd, and a 200yd range, it's $10 per hour. You can find the map here.

http://www.claytargetsonline.com/club.php/1386

If you are going to shoot rifle, Grand River is a lot nicer range, and better supervised, to cut down on the BS. But they only have 25yd, 50yd, and 100yd. There is no 200yd, or close range pistol range. But A&a is an option if you want to shoot pistol also, or if you want to stretch out your rifle a bit.

Hope this helps ya out!

I shoot the IDPA matches at Youngstown Rifle & Pistol. Always had a pleasant experience there and it seems very well kept up and such. You can find out more at their website: http://www.yrpc.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Was getting ready to post about Grand river, what are your thoughts on this range? Its fairly close to me but I've been unable to make it down there because of my work/family schedule. I cannot find any pictures online, although your information on range sizes answers my questions on that.

How are the RM's? I see on they're site that "rapid fire" is a no-no, do you know what "rapid fire" is to them? Or is it a catch all rule to kick Aholes out? My idea of rapid fire is a AR on burst or auto, there's may be the 3 second rule. I ask because I mostly shoot with my PLR-22 which just begs to be fired steadily. And also for training emptying a mag and keeping it on target I've seen people suggest with CCW. Thanks.

I do not shoot there much any more, but I do still make it out there once or twice a year. In my opinion it is a very nice range, they do a good job maintaining it, and the DNR staff that man the range have always been very nice. They do have rules, and enforce them, but they do not try to be richards about it, and that is one of the things I like about the range. When there is a cease fire, they ask everyone to leave their weapons on the bench, step behind the yellow line, and no one is allowed to go forward of the yellow line, or handle their weapons while anyone is down range. It is a cold range, so they don't, or at least didn't allow loaded, concealed pistols while shooting there. Not really sure about rapid fire, but I have never seen them call anybody on it. Unless you are just trying to dump your mags as fast as you can I don't think you will have a problem.

If you go, buy your range permit wherever you buy your hunting or fishing license, they do not sell them at the range! They provide a stand to staple your target to, but you will need paper targets, and staples, or tape. And you will also need the normal range items, like eyes & ears, and whatever else you normally bring.

Thanks for all your tips/suggestions. Ill definitly have to make it down, maybe this weekend. Only thing that worrys me is if its really that busy. I've been trying to contact the Niles gun club to see about joining as they are even closer but they must not know how to check emails, and I work when they suggest to come down for application and such, I just refuse to beg (twice) and pay 300$ PLUS donate time to the youngstown club. Guess ill just keep going to friends houses when I can :x

The one in Salem these guys mentioned seems a LOT more reasonable of a place. The Youngstown one was very off putting when I was trying to get information together. =(
