Outdoor Range // Canton McKinley Club

Post by TKshooter »

I am looking to spice things up and the indoor range I go to just can't keep up! :( (I mean its a nice indoor range, with digital distance readout, clean, well venhilated, and friendly)

I want to try an outdoor pistol range in the Summit County area or close.

I have read a lot about Canton McKinley Club- they seem perfect EXCEPT you have to be recommended by 2 current members

**How do you go about looking into private clubs if you do not know ANYONE??? **

-What I am looking for is something outdoor with variety- I don't want to just stand in a stall and shoot at the same target. I want to get moving, have some sunlight, and some challanges.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

OK, I'm going to join this thread too, to watch and learn. :)

In the meanwhile, TKshooter, where's that nice indoor range you go to?

I go to The Riverside Range in Cuyahoga Falls. Indoor 25 yard pistol range with about 8-9 stalls. (Only one table for guns- so if the stalls are filled the range bags and pistols pile up)

I thought they were average until I went to another range and realized that Riverside was pretty nice in comparision.

I just need to get out of the stalls! :|

We have many members who travel 1+ hrs. to take advantage of our resources.
I'll gladly answer any questions if anyone is interested.

Links on our homepage provide a lot of detailed info though.

Ok this obstacle is typically easier to overcome than you think.. Every Club I belong to has Scheduled matches, Whether they are Skeet, trap, CMP, USPSA, IDPA, Bullseye, Action Pistol, Steel Match, bowling Pin, Practical Pistol, undercover matches, CMP Rimfire, the list goes on and on.. These scheduled events are typically OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, Which means you can show up, pay the fee for the event which is typically in the $5.00 - $15.00 range to cover targets, and equipment provided by the club.

Now that you have arrived at your chosen event, mingle with the people there, talk to them about the club, put your best foot forward, and after attending an event a couple times you will get to know the people there and should have no trouble getting a couple people to agree to sign for you. They are your sponsors at that point, so anything you do over the course of the first year of your membership will reflect on them..

So hop on over to Canton McKinleys web page and look at the Match Schedule and pick out something you like.

The down side of joining a sportsman club is that it is filled with a bunch of enablers.. They will loan you equipment to try out, they will make recommendation for equipment they like, next ting you know your firearms collection will double or quadruple in size, and you will be taking part in events that you didn't know you had an interest in previously, and you'll be having a blast doing it.

Enjoy your new club !!

A way that my club recutes members is through open to the public shoots

It is a bit more of a drive, 12 miles or so, but I am a member of the Louisville Sportsman's club. We have an open to the public lucky X shoot the first sunday of each month(registration 11:00 shooting starts at 12:00 unless shoots fill up sooner) so you can come in meet members tour facilities ect, and maybe win a turkey.

There is also a practice trap shoot twice a month on Wednesday nights at 18:00. THat is the second and fourth wednesdays of the month. These are not as heavely attended and are more often not held due to weather or range work parties.

We are a fairly small club (read Lots of alone range time), a 100yd range (but narrow), Shotgun sports range (trap, soon to be under lights, and the Lucky X) and achery range.

Louisville Sportsman's Club
5300 Maplegrove Ave., Louisville, OH, 44641
If you are coming in from Louisville, North on Maplegrove it is just before the Railroad tracks, and easy to miss.

We do have members driving in from Akron.

Another club you might look into is Greenport Tactical Association.

I joined for a year several years ago - just far enough away from me that I can't really get out there with any kind of regularity (when combined with kids/family weekend responsibilities), so I was only with them one year. I'd definitely rejoin if my time constraints were to improve. They're a bit south and east of Canton.

They have an AMAZING outdoor facility - natural cliff wall is backstop on one range, another is a square pit - 360 degree backstop, they also have a 125-yard (I think) range area. The range owner basically built this place around his house. So, with it being on the property he lives on, it's not open daily like a commercial range - there are evenings during the week it's open, and usually on the weekends they'll have IDPA or other meets, and weeknights there are rifle nights, plus they have a pretty decent selection of trainers coming in for handgun, rifle, etc. I believe in the past couple years they've hosted John Farnam, and Larry Vickers taught an AK class this year. Also, their season goes along with the weather - they close up in fall through spring. So, it's not a place you can show up any time you get the itch to hit the range, but I think they have some really good offerings, and I haven't seen any ranges that have the flexibility they have.

Is there a website for the Louisville Club?

I tried some searching online but could not find anything.

Thank you everyone for your input- I am still on the search for a club. I haven't had time to go to any matches yet but I am frequenting my indoor club.

Sometimes I just can't get enough shooting. It is really so much fun and it makes me wish I had more money, but believe me- I do spend what I have!

The range at Burtzland Oufitters in Alliance is outdoors and they allow pretty much anything that's not wholly unsafe. They have different matches from time to time and even teach the NRA BP class (as well as others iirc). Jason Burtz is the proprietor. Their website is simply Burtzland.com. It's a small range, but well-suited for CHL pistol drills. Also, the range is open anytime the store is, provided you're willing to brave the weather. Oh, the price - $5/hr. Not too shabby at all.
