The illumination from a .223 tracer round can't be seen by the shooter until it gets out to about 100 yds. Can't think of many civilian SD scenarios at that distance. :|

In Iraq I carried the last 3 rounds as tracers for a while. It's impossible to keep an accurate count in a fight, but you'll know if you are in the top half or bottom half of your mag. If I was in the bottom half and I had time I reloaded, if I didn't have time I shot it till it stopped shooting, then reloaded. Either way the tracers never really made a difference in my reloads, some guys swore by it though. By the end of the rotation I just was carrying ball.

I did carry a mag of straight tracers though, it came in hand a few times for marking targets. Curmudgeon3 is right too, at closer ranges you'll never see them anyway.

Agreed on the 100 meter point. But also, if you aren't careful, you can catch stuff on fire with tracers haha. It's happened a few times when we were on the range.
