Suggestions on Training for the Physically Challenged

Post by Farmer Tim »

I am trying to find the best possible source for training. I am a bigger Guy 6'3 and hefty lol. When I was in the fire service I suffered fractures to my L3 and L4 and I had a C2 Fracture" thankfully I didn't die or become paralyzed". I just move slower and I realize that this could make me a target for some of the seedier people in life. I know personal awareness is #1 and I like to think I am alert to my surroundings and I try to carry myself in a sure manner.

Some days I have to walk with a cane and I would like to find a facility that could train me in defensive use of that and if needed to be able to go from cane to firearm. I got this from Best Defense tonight. I can do some basics with the cane and I bought myself a Cold Steel Blackthorn Replica. It actually is pretty good for me as far as helping me walk when I need it.

I wonder if TDI has anything that is geared towards someone like me? I looked at their site and I think they may but I am sure I need to call and ask Mr Benner. Just wondering of anyone here is in the same boat as I and has been thru any similar training?

Also thought about some martial arts etc to develop better muscle memory and physical conditioning.

Thanks,

Tim

See who trains/certifies your local PD in straight baton. Maybe that person will assist you.

If not a viable option: Remember to spin-strike to the back and the extremities, and jab to the front center mass.

Tim: They have a Cane Defense class. I have no knowledge of the specifics, but every other class I have taken from them is first rate. You should check out their TDI cane. It's a bit pricey (~$120 if I remember correctly) but is an excellent self defense tool. It is light-weight machined aluminum (think of it as a 3.5 - 4 foot long MagLight-only lighter) with knurled gripping areas on the shaft and a unique end to the curved handle. I believe Kabar is manufacturing it for them now. I bought one for my wife who needs a cane for walking. BTW, it is airplane legal. SInce Georgetown is not that far from West Union, you could probably run over there and pick one up and speak with Mr. Benner.

Mike Janich has a video called "Forever Armed." It is a good all around improvised weapons dvd. He also has some really good affiliates near Columbus. They have open training about once a month at Grove City Karate.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will go out to TDI and talk with John. Let him evaluate me too as to my limits and If the cane is at least 37inchs I'll get one. I will look up the Mke Janich series of dvd's and try to find the number for Grove City Karate and
see when they offer some of his courses.

Anyway know of any martial arts places down this way say the eastgate area?

Thanks,

Tim

The cane is actually overlength, you cut it to meet your needs. A hacksaw works fine.

Just be sure to cut at the bottom straight part, not the curved handle. j/k :)

Used properly, I have no doubt that a cane can be a formidable close range tool. Good on you for seeking the training!

Not in Ohio. We have concealed handgun licenses, not concealed weapons licenses. I haven't looked lately but sword canes may even be mentioned by name as prohibited.

Well certainly sword canes are prohibited by any means.

While you'll get different opinions on them, Suarez International puts together some good classes as well. And I seem to recall them talking about working with various handicaps in many of their courses.
