In Praise of the P-64 - A bargain CCW gun

Post by Radionicist »

A Polish milsurp P-64 pistol found its way to my collection recently, courtesy of J&G Sales. The P-64 is a compact, single-stack semi-auto which chambers the 9x18 Makarov round. I own and enjoy shooting a Bulgarian Pistolet Makarova, so I thought the P-64 would be a natural fit.

I had read descriptions of the double-action trigger pull of the P-64 that made me consider surgery to add a bionic trigger finger before shooting this gun; that turned out to be unnecessary. I had also read about the fearsome recoil, but thought, "How bad can it be?"

A quick online order later, the P-64 and spare magazine were on the way. J&G Sales helpfully offers a Wolff recoil spring and hammer spring replacement kit right on the same page as the gun, and I had them shipped together in the same order.

The friendly folks over on the Unofficial P-64 Resource Message Board guided me through the spring replacement and cleaning procedures, and having finished those, I headed to the range at lunchtime today to see if anything blew up. I took along my Kahr PM-9 for comparison.

In preparing the pistols for shooting, I noticed the similarity in overall height and length compared to the PM-9. However, the P-64 is much thinner, more in line with my Ruger LCP.

Shooting the P-64 was a great deal of fun. I was glad I had replaced the recoil spring, because the recoil is still strong with the 22lbs. Wolff spring. It is far from unmanageable, though, and if you're used to shooting a small polymer-framed gun like the PM-9, or a light .38 snubbie with +p rounds, the modified P-64 is no big deal. The double-action trigger is still a bit stiff after the hammer spring replacement, especially as compared to the PM-9, but not bad at all. I'd compare it to a Walter PPK in that regard. And, the P-64 single-action trigger is delightful - short, light, and crisp.

I shot the gun pretty accurately at 7 yards, just a bit low from center. The sights are small but usable, and I found that the gun points naturally.

All-in-all, the modified P-64 is an amazing value, with a double-action trigger with decocker for safe carry, low weight and a slim profile for concealment, and a round which offers 25% more power than a .380 Auto, for less than $200 shipped with accessories. This one won't replace my Kahr PM-9 as my daily carry pistol, but it will be perfect as a knockabout gun. Now to stock up on 9x18 before everyone else does!

I'm glad you like your P64. I enjoy my P63 but really don't shoot it. However, I must take issue with your statement that the 9X18 has 25% more power than the 9X17. According to Hornady, they're the same ft/lb energy. Other manufacturers list them at just about the same with the tie going to the mak round. I don't feel undergunned carrying my 9mm short.

@OP,

Glad you like your P-64. I enjoy mine, too.

The big selling point for me was the SLIM profile. Makes for a perfect pocket gun.

I'm sure you're correct - I *think* the data I had was based on military loadings of the 9x17 vs. 9x18, but I may simply be wrong. I agree with you fully about the modern .380 Auto loadings, and I carry handguns in three of the 9mm flavors without discriminating between them (Ruger LCP in 9x17, P-64 in 9x18, and Kahr PM-9 in 9x19). Alas, I own nothing chambered in 9x20. :)

Thanks for the correction.

I've always been curious about the Polish 9x18 offering, since I have a real affection for the PM myself. Your review makes me want to go buy one.

I have a P64 and love it. IT is not one I would take to shoot on a regular basis as the recoil of the small frame I find a bit punishing after a box or 2 :lol: . I had considered using it from trading stock until I shot it! Now I can't imagine getting rid of it. Like Morne said, it is the perfect pocket gun when you don't want to carry that double stack beast in your waist! :D nice thing is you can buy them cheap! I think J&G sells em for $159 or so.

I have used a P-64 for my carry gun for 2 years. The accuracy is fantastic for the size of pistol it is. They are built hardy and simple to break down for cleaning as well. This one is mine.

I am a devout lover of the 9x18, but in reality it only offers 10% more poop than 380, but I'm glad to have that 10% any day.
