I had read descriptions of the double-action trigger pull of the P-64 that made me consider surgery to add a bionic trigger finger before shooting this gun; that turned out to be unnecessary. I had also read about the fearsome recoil, but thought, "How bad can it be?"
A quick online order later, the P-64 and spare magazine were on the way. J&G Sales helpfully offers a Wolff recoil spring and hammer spring replacement kit right on the same page as the gun, and I had them shipped together in the same order.
The friendly folks over on the Unofficial P-64 Resource Message Board guided me through the spring replacement and cleaning procedures, and having finished those, I headed to the range at lunchtime today to see if anything blew up. I took along my Kahr PM-9 for comparison.
In preparing the pistols for shooting, I noticed the similarity in overall height and length compared to the PM-9. However, the P-64 is much thinner, more in line with my Ruger LCP.

Shooting the P-64 was a great deal of fun. I was glad I had replaced the recoil spring, because the recoil is still strong with the 22lbs. Wolff spring. It is far from unmanageable, though, and if you're used to shooting a small polymer-framed gun like the PM-9, or a light .38 snubbie with +p rounds, the modified P-64 is no big deal. The double-action trigger is still a bit stiff after the hammer spring replacement, especially as compared to the PM-9, but not bad at all. I'd compare it to a Walter PPK in that regard. And, the P-64 single-action trigger is delightful - short, light, and crisp.
I shot the gun pretty accurately at 7 yards, just a bit low from center. The sights are small but usable, and I found that the gun points naturally.
All-in-all, the modified P-64 is an amazing value, with a double-action trigger with decocker for safe carry, low weight and a slim profile for concealment, and a round which offers 25% more power than a .380 Auto, for less than $200 shipped with accessories. This one won't replace my Kahr PM-9 as my daily carry pistol, but it will be perfect as a knockabout gun. Now to stock up on 9x18 before everyone else does!
