I would check with the airline to be sure you follow their regs.

Check Delta's website. They may have company limitations on how many guns you can bring and how much ammo without having to pay for extra luggage.

TSA regulations are that it must be in checked luggage, not carry on, and be unloaded and locked in a hard sided case. The ammo cannot be in the same locked container. You have to declare the firearm to the ticket agent when you check your bags. You have to open the case so the ticket agent can place the proper tag inside the case with the gun. You need to hang around until after the gun has gone throught then TSA screeners. They may or may not ask you to open the case for them.

A suggestion I often see made on gun forums is to try and not use a pistol case that makes it obvious what is inside. Like a case with name Glock all over the outside. This way a baggage handler or other passenger who beat you to baggage check will not know what is inside and be tempted to steal it. My grandmother has had jewelry stolen from her checked bags before by the baggage handlers. I believe that you are allowed to lock your gun in a hard case than then place the case inside a regular unlocked suitcase.

I have a personal story. On one occasion I flew Airtran from Dayton to Atlanta with six handguns. It was vacation, not business, so I wanted to get some shooting in on the family property in GA. When I arrived at baggage check I quickly found all of my other suitcases but the carousel had stopped spitting out luggage and my gun case was no where in sight. I really started to freak out inside, but I was trying to keep it together outwardly. Then I saw an older gentleman who was wearing an Airtran shirt and helping people with luggage and directing them to the places they needed to go. I quickly walked up and asked him if he had seen a black hardsided case with a combo lock on it and I told him what size. He said he had seen it when it first came out and figured that it probably had either guns (he said he's seen lots of gun cases come through Atlanta) or high priced optics or electronics in it so he had grabbed it and taken it to the Airtran baggage office nearby where picking it up would require showing your ticket and ID. I told him I got rather scared when I couldn't find it but I thanked him for looking out for my guns. I picked it up at the baggage office no problem and was then on my merry way.

won't be a problem if you follow their guidelines. I just flew with delta about 2 weeks ago. I'd recommend you call there customer service for a copy of their guidelines just to be safe.

Wow. No wonder Neal Boortz flies Airtran whenever he can. If they would all do that I might feel a little bit better about flying with my guns.
Total repeal of ALL firearms/weapons laws at the local, state and federal levels. Period. Wipe the slate clean.

Well, the main reason I fly Airtran out of the Dayton airport instead of Delta out of Cincinnati Nothern Kentucky airport when I am going to Atlanta is because I can usually get round trip tickets from Airtran for less than $250 and they usually cost more than $500 with Delta. The drive time from my house to either airport is about the same, so it just makes sense to fly Airtran.
