Good firearm shops in Dayton?

Are there any really good shops in/near the Dayton area? By good, I mean, good selection, good staff, good prices, and it doesn't hurt if the store is clean and nice as well. By good selection I mean a good selection of all the name brand longguns and handguns, and by good prices I mean something that's not much more than what I can get on the internet.

The best that fits this description for me is Olde English Outfitters, but that's a little far to drive and their prices are ok but not the best. Target World's got a good selection and the store is nice, but they're really far and pricey too. Ohio Rapid Fire is also a drive, and they're mostly limited to custom rifles.

Closer to home, I know of Jim's Guns in Beavercreek, but it's not really a good store, and they don't have a great selection. There's also one I recall in Xenia, but it was mostly revos.

So I guess I'm looking for a nice one-stop-shop for handguns in the immediate Dayton area. Any leads?

Arms Depot on Watervelet,
kind of poor on appearance, but decent prices

The Arms Depot looks a little too much like the gun store in Pulp Fiction for my tastes. Ditto for Jim's guns in Beavercreek.

Avoid the shop in Centerville, the old man that runs it has been obnoxiously rude any time I have ever been in there. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I reserved judgement until some others I know told me that they got the exact same response from him. In shot, he wouldn't stop eating his lunch to show the customer a gun, and they were there to buy and not to browse. So he lost the business that day.

Gander Mountain has a great selection, and they allegedly have a guarantee where they match any competitor's price. Although they refused to match the price that I pulled off of CDNN on a used Sig.

I dealt with Peabody Sports in Kettering, Ohio when I bought my Glock, they set up at gun shows. John at Peabody is a certified Glock and a certified Sig armorer. They also have an office in Kettering and are a pleasure to deal with.

I stopped in at the shop in Centerville, and had the same experience. He basically told me I was an idiot (in not so many words) for not liking the Glocks I tried there. He's part of the reason I ended up with a Walther, I guess.

Oh yes Gunsport.
I quit going there about 10 years ago, I had an FN49 in 8 mauser that blew up, his response was like " tough".
The importer Century Arms, made him replace it, he wasn't happy
about it, I still do business with CA, but it was the last ime I bought anything from him.

I am not surprised in the least ot see others with negative expereriences at Gunsport. My guess is that he is independently wealthy and does not need the business, given his attitude and the way he runs off customers. The other gun shops in the area like him just they way he is, because his nasty attitude sends the business right out of Gunsport and straight to competitor shops.

I personally am a loyal customer to those who treat me right, and I imagine most of the people on this message board are no different. I will continue taking my business to Peabody Sports in Kettering.

I was in gunsport today, he was as rude as he always is. I just went in to look at a Fobus holster that I had seen online. I had no intention of buying from him, just wanted to get a first hand look before ordering. Last time I was in there he was dogging out some guy who was trying to sell a Keltec to him. Told the guy he would not give him 50 cents for that paperwieght. However, when I was in there today he told me that my S&W 3913 was a stupid gun to carry for CCW and that I should get a Keltec P3AT like he carries. I just laughed at him and walked out.

He has always been a crotchety old man, I tell all my friends and family to never shop there. I don't see how he stays in business.

Where is this Peabody sports in Kettering? I tried to look it up, but could not find it.

Peabody Sports is on Hempstead Station in Kettering. If you turn off Stroop, pass the post office, then cross David and keep going until the road dead ends into a warehouse, you will see the sign there.

John has treated me right with the last 2 guns I purchased from him, and I wont hesitate to recommend him to anyone who is looking for a gun.

If people keep telling their stories about the grumpy old man at Gunsport, I will be tempted to print this off and mail it to him.

Just out of curiosity....how in the heck did you kaboom a FN mauser!!??

Mismatched bolt with receiver and bad headspace??? Even at that you'd be hardpressed to get a good mauser to fail.

I read once about a handloader who accidently charged a 8mm reload with pistol powder instead of rifle powder...oops. He definately got a kaboom out of the deal, but the rifle performed flawlessly. Both forward lugs sheared, but the safety lug saved his face. The receiver ring fractured, but gasses had already been directed away by the safety ports in the bolt. The shooter had only minor burns from the incident.

If yer ever in Central Ohio come over and see us at Buckeye Outdoors. We have the friendliest sales people in the state!! Heck, I had some guy in the store just the other day who brought a mail order catalog in with him. His visit was for the express purpose of looking at our stock that he was planning to buy from the catalog. Personally, I thought that was rude but what the heck, I accomodated him. Maybe he'll come back and buy a firearm....let's see him get THAT through the mail!

I work night shift.

(my real job is in a hospital).

Buckeye Outdoors is in Hebron Ohio. We're right off I-70. Take the SR 79 exit north. Go right on Rt 40 then right again at the first light. We're about 200 yards down the road on the right hand side.

We have about 40 feet of two tiered long gun racks and an equal length of three tiered handgun cases. It's an impressive selection. You can hold, touch and drool all you want.

The gun sales staff is VERY knowledgeable and we bend over backward to help you make a selection, or just browse.

I've had no problems at Gunsport in Centerville. I use Olde English on Ginginhamsburg (spelling???) Road north of Vandalia. Probably one of the most knowledgeable set of staff at any store in area. Vandalia Tactical is good. The Ten Range in Xenia is good if you are looking east of Dayton. If you like Arms Depot, then try Rich's Pawn Shop and Gun Store in Beavercreek at Grange Hall and Patterson Road in Richland Shopping Center. It is a definite trip there!!

It was an FN49, not a bolt gun, but semi auto.
I had fired about 700 rds, out of then tried some ammo out of Hansen, (now out of business) Century Arms thought it was a round of ammo that kept rifle from full lock up, but enough to allow it to fire.
Century replaced it, but Gunsport was not happy about it.

Just went to Vandalia Tactical this weekend, I liked it - nice clean store, good selection (although prices were pretty much MSRP). Good selection of accessories too.

I think i'll go back next week and pick up a CQC holster.
