Reminded me of something that happened to me about 35 years ago.
(As I've bored everbody with, I'm an old rent-a-cop. No more Commission, but I'm still involved. I used to drive a series of "wannabemobiles" - cars that looked like the PD didn't quite want them, but the lights and antennae were impressive.)
I happened to see a traffic accident not far from my (former day job) office, and was surprised to find a friend and her daughter involved. Stopped, of course, and turned on the overheads.
A quick check for injuries, and then a call to the PD via one of the radios in the car. (Ham Radio based mobile phone, actually.)
I kept busy directing traffic & such until an OSP Trooper pulled up. I walked over to fill him in and happened to see his name tag. Almost lost it. His name was "Speedy"....
(I lost track of the guy - he got a bunch of promotions, etc., but has probably retired by now. IAC, that really was his name. Had a chance to chat briefly with him at the old Boardman PD building one afternoon while meeting with one of the PD Brass about a minor incident at the day job.)
So welcome to the new guy!

Saving a slot. I was over at the range the other night and one of the local PD guys thereabouts stopped by to yak. Got to kidding around, and I told him that the SO wouldn't accept my OPOTA certification. As you guys all know, OPOTA (OH's "Police Academy"), military service, and the prescribed training regimen can be used to cover the training requirements for a CHL.
The PD guy lit up: "How the heck could they not approve an OPOTA certification?!"
"It was from 1968...."
So, I waited a little too long. Sue me....

Regards,
