so in this day and age i think i'd like to carry a rifle in my car at all times, i plan to mount the weapon in the trunk, i know you're suppose to have the ammo in a separte compartment of the car right? so what if i have the gun mounted in the trunk of my car with a cable lock going through the action? can i put my ammo in the trunk too? my plan is to have the weapon mounted in the trunk out of sight, and secured to the vehicle via cable/lock so if someone were to possible steal my car (unlikely) the gun would be out of sight and even if they did find it it's be locked to the car
what do ya think? i thought about calling my sheriff's dept. but they're a bunch of morons, one guy there didn't know what a 1911 was
not trying to be disrespectful but why would you want to carry a rifle in your car all the time. I worry this would be used against you if someithing went down. It could be construed as you went around looking for trouble.
So I ask, Why?
Bill
We must carry arms because we value our lives and those of our loved ones, because we will not be dealt with by force or threat of force, and do not live at the pleasure and discretion of the lawless."

just cause i can, people hang rifles in their trucks back window all the time, i have a car so that's out of the question, i dont see how it'd be constructed as i "went looking for trouble" the same could be said about carrying a handgun, idk if this gun will be in my car all the time, but i'm putting the mounts in as it'll be in there most of the time

I would use a plastic hard case with a lock in the handle or some kind of rig like that rather than a relatively loose rifle and a cable lock, OR I would go all the way and get a cruiser style electric lock for it.
IF the rifle is locked into a hard case, and you have the ammo also locked (as in an ammo can with a lock added) then you have basically seperated your trunk into seperate locked compartments.
thanks for the info, the rack i'm gonna be mounting has straps that double secure the weapon via velcro, the plastic case would be good but i want this to be out of sight, as for the ammo i dont know about a ammo can in the trunk, do you think having the gun itself locked is enough?
Nope, since the gun is exposed, not cased... at minumum (I wouldn't recommend this type of transport, the law says locked case - trucks are exempt as they have no trunk) I would have the ammo in a locked can. For example, if I had my Glock locked in a case, and the ammo was in that case, it is loaded whether I have a cable lock on it or not. Your gun and its ammo are in the same case - trunk, together. This is problematic if it is ever an issue with LE.
The way I read the law..........If gun is in trunk or in a place unaccessible unless you leave vehicle then it doesn't matter if loaded or unloaded........... Ammo has to be in different location or locked if gun is accessible without leaving vehicle..............Can someone enlighten us , wouldn't be the first time I was wrong about Ohio gun laws.
I dont belive all states require all of those stipulations for tansport. I have read many people haing car guns. One guy had a nice benz wiht the center consol holding 6 fully filled magazined, and in the trunk, and Ar-15 was bounted with quick release straps.

Splat,
You can carry a loaded firearm on a your person in a holster, in a bag or container with a cover and latching mechanism of some type in plain sight or locked in a box or glove compartrment,
I don't see locked in a trunk or place unaccessible unless you leave the vehicle in there anywhere.
People WIHTOUT a CHL can NOT carry a loaded firearm in a vehicle AT ALL.
