New ATF Nominee Chuck Canterbury

Post by bignflnut »

To anyone still counting on Trump to protect your gun rights: Please start paying attention and stop apologizing for his anti-gun actions.

Let’s forget his banning of “bump stocks” by fiat and his hints that he wants to do the same with suppressors — on the eve of actually getting them deregulated, for crying out loud — and look at his recent nomination to lead ATF. This guy named Chuck Canterbury is anti-gun, and has proven it many times. Is this the sort of person any freedom-loving person wants to have in charge of BATF?

No matter who occupies the White House, no matter what initial is next to his or her name, it is the job of all patriots to question their motives and actions — and above all, to oppose any actions which infringe upon our liberty.

Blindly supporting a party or an individual is not patriotism. Please join me in opposing Trump’s anti-gun pick as ATF boss.

Since wordof Canterbury’s nomination, he has been praised by the trade organizations for the firearms and suppressor industries — the National Shooting Sports Foundation and American Suppressor Association.

Meanwhile, two other pro-gun groups, the National Rifle Association, and Second Amendment Foundation, have not released current statements on Canterbury’s nomination. However, in 2011, the NRA spoke with the FOP leader, saying the gun organization and the nation’s largest police group “have worked together on numerous issues, and thanks to the leadership of FOP National President Chuck Canterbury our working relationship is now stronger than ever.”
"Working" with the NRA hasn't been positive for RKBA recently.

Thanks in large part to FOP we still have the ridiculous duty to notify and duty to retreat. They have been the arch enemy of concealed carry and firearm rights in general. Nothing good can come from having their leader as head of ATF. Talk about the fox guarding the hen house.

Chuck Canterbury, President Trump's nominee to serve as head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, is likely to see his nomination withdrawn due to stringent opposition from Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Washington Free Beacon learned on Thursday.

"Chuck Canterbury does NOT have sufficient support in the Judiciary Committee and is now expected to be held up instead of getting a vote today," a GOP Senate aide told the Free Beacon on Thursday morning. "Republican members are (1) Concerned about his stances on gun control, and (2) there is still some bad blood for him flipping the Fraternal Order of Police in support of the First Step Act (after opposing the more moderate version), allegedly in exchange for the ATF Director nomination."

It was Canterbury's views on gun control, however, that sealed the deal. His past support for universal background check proposals and for President Obama’s attorney general Eric Holder were both major stumbling blocks, according to the second Senate source.

While head of the FOP, Canterbury explicitly supported background checks. In a 2013 letter, he told then-Senate Judiciary chairman Patrick Leahy (D., Vt.) that "expansion of background checks on firearm purchasers" was an "absolutely critical" element of "addressing gun violence."

"We believe the most logical starting point to address gun violence is the expansion of the background check system," Canterbury wrote on behalf of the FOP. "Incomplete or absent background checks create a gaping hole in the wall between firearms and criminals."

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, just 10.5 percent of gun violence offenders purchased their firearm through a transaction that would be covered by any expanded background check proposal. Additionally, a Free Beacon analysis earlier this year found Colorado's universal background check law had little effect on the number of checks done in the state, suggesting it was not as effective as advocates claim.
Thanks, Champ.

Thanks to your activism, Gun Owners of America has scored a stunning victory — forcing a humiliating postponement in efforts to confirm the head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The Free Beacon is reporting that the Chuck Canterbury nomination has been indefinitely postponed for now because of opposition from Republican Senators who are “concerned about his stances on gun control.”

The Free Beacon quotes a Senate staffer as saying that Canterbury’s “2A views are bad and he'd lose a lot of votes in [the Judiciary] committee.”

The vote was supposed to occur in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

With this nominee on the “ropes,” the Trump administration is reportedly digging in its heels and calling key Republican Senators to change their positions.

So while several Republican Senators have been clearly listening to you, the battle is definitely not over yet!

Pro-gun ally Senator Mike Lee of Utah has been leading the opposition to Canterbury’s nomination since July of 2019.

And Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) recently told The Hill that Canterbury’s views on the Second Amendment were “really, really concerning.”

In addition to Lee and Hawley, other key legislators who have expressed concern over Chuck Canterbury are Senators John Kennedy (R-LA) and Ben Sasse (R-NE).

Gun owners should encourage these four senators to continue their opposition. For without their support, the Canterbury nomination will die in committee.

Yoink.
For the record, the only gun legislation the FOP has any position on is the Veterans’ Heritage Firearms Act which “would allow individuals, veterans, law enforcement officers and law enforcement agencies to register firearms they possess which were prohibited by the enactment of the Gun Control Act of 1968.”

In other words, Canterbury’s refusal to answer the questions can’t be interpreted as a good thing in the least. After all, the one position the FOP seems to have on guns currently is a pro-gun position. If he simply shared the FOP’s stance, why not say that he was pro-gun?

The only answer one can reasonably reach is that he’s not pro-gun, yet knows he’d never be confirmed for the post if that came to light.

That’s certainly my take and, I suspect, what a lot of the senators believed to be likely as well. As a result, they weren’t going to confirm him without a straight answer.

As a result, President Trump did the only thing he possibly could. He rescinded the nomination.
Way to go, Champ.
