Most depressing city in the area

Post by Gramps »

Went on a road trip to Arkansas this past weekend. Got rerouted a few times due to road construction and getting off route.
We went through a small city called Cairo Ill.
What a depressed place..... Dollar stores, liqueur and lottery places are all that are open, not even a gas station.
Burned out houses, almost no traffic and a few folks walking. Was a guy walking with a 2x2 with hunk of chain hooked to the end of it swinging it around.
Sad.....

Turns out racial unrest (and other factors) have contributed to Cairo's population decline since 1950's. The area has had quite the history back to Civil war times.
Yes, I had some time to do some reading this afternoon.

Sounds like Campbell, Ohio where we had a protest many years ago.

I'm 5min from Campbell & just like many other depressed area's, it's like a slow erupting volcano that lava just keeps creeping closer.
The profit margin for said Dollar/Liquor stores in general is outrageous, it's self explanatory when you see them pop up in the most run down area's.
As long as they avoid too much theft loss they will continue to stay in business.

We like to visit Mill Creek, that's pretty nice.

That's a heck of a detour if you're in Ohio. Or are you in another state?

Wife was using an atlas to route us. Maybe that had something to do with it! We made it home though!

We ended up going through Cairo a couple of years ago, enroute back to Nashville from Chiraq.

Thought it would be "cool" to take the scenic route.

Not so much.....
