Drivers license scanning for casual purchase at gun store ??

What are your thought on a store scanning the barcode on your Drivers License for a casual purchase ? I stopped at a LGS tonight and was going to buy a coupe pistol magazines and a new lock-box for the car.

when I go to the counter the clerk asks to see my ID..
I think it odd, but flip open the wallet to show my ID.
he says "no I need to scan the back of your license".
I said "why would you need to scan my license, all I am purchasing is a couple magazines".
He said "we always have, it's our store policy. I'm just following the rules. (OK I get that he's an employee, so not his fault)
I said "no thank you".
He replied well if you don't like it then ....
I replied "OK no problem". turned and walked out.

They lost a $100.00+ impulse buy today, and any future purchases I may have made there. (And I do sort of have a firearms buying and shooting habit)

I get having to fill out a 4473 when purchasing a firearm because it's required by law (although it shouldn't be). but to allow you to scan all my personal info into your computer for a non regulated sale ? No thanks. At this point I don't believe I will shop there again if that is their policy. sounds like what the Brady Group wants stores to do with their responsible retailer program, get all your ID info for all firearms and ammo sales in a separate DB, and record the transaction on video. I also will not recommend Point Blank to anyone in the future, since I do not agree with their policy of collecting personal information for every sale.

I don't just hand out my personal info to every retailer I shop at for the same reason I don't post it all over the Internet.
Am I being unreasonable here ?

Nope. Ain't happening. As soon as I get a new DL I take a Sharpie to the barcode and a magnet to the magnetic strip on the back. Any info you need you can read it off the front or ask me. I may or may not answer.

That's.....extremely odd.

We're supposed to have a name for every sale on the register system, so maybe that's their way of doing it quickly. If we don't do that, it won't ring up an item or allow a sale.

Our way was to create an Anonymous Anonymous client name who's extremely old for selling mags/ammo/etc.

I've seen it at various retailers the last few years. Nope, not happening.

I walked out of one gun range and shop when they said they can't sell me anything without it scanned. Nope. It doesn't leave my wallet. Look but no touch.

Point Blank uses licenses like a membership card.

NOPE! They can see ANY info they might need in their fairy tale retail lil' minds, by simply looking at the DL. Not that there is any age restrictions, quantity restrictions on the mentioned items. THE PRIMARY REASON TO DO THIS (imho) IS TRACKING PURCHASES.

Treat your DL number like a Social Security number. Would you provide your SS# ?
...as I get a new DL I take a Sharpie to the barcode and a magnet to the magnetic strip on the back. Any info...
I previously thought any changes to the DL is (was) considered defacing, and, could invalidate the article? I plead ignorance to the magnet swipe deleting the embedded info, I would like more info please.

And, is there any DOWNSIDES to deleted such info?

Don't know, don't care. The retailers and others have NO business collecting additional information about me that I do not consent to providing. I don't hand my DL over to sales clerks or others. Even if I am purchasing something that is age gated then they can read the birth date just find while I hold it for them. Only time I have handed my DL over is at a car dealer when I wanted to test drive something and at the fireworks stores. Heck, I don't even provide an accurate ZIP code when asked. When I was living up in the NE corner of the state and was going to FFF on a regular basis, they got a different ZIP code every time I checked out.

If they want to make a sale then they can mind their own business. I could not care less what information their sales system wants to collect.

You know who else doesn't care? LEO's. On the few occasions I've been stopped, never once was anything said about the barcode being blacked out.

As for my SS#... no, I do not hand it out to ANYONE unless it is a situation where it is needed for <gasp> SS related financials or reporting. Have told more than a few potential employers they can have it after they tell me I am hired. They do not need it as part of the interview process. Same for doctors, feel free to make something up for your records if you wish but you are not using my SS# as a reference number.

Yes, on some issues I can be quite the grumpy, old, curmudgeon. And yes I realize I'm being redundant. As I've said before, I am to a point in my life where I simply don't care.

Could be worse. We could live in CA.
U.S. Rep. McCarthy shared a story of a recent trip to a big box retailer. He wanted to purchase 12-gauge shotgun shells for a charity skeet shoot, and the checkout attendant asked him for multiple forms of identification, including his passport.

The highest-ranking Republican Congressman in the House of Representatives walked away from the sale out of frustration.

Some- mostly in the Democrat party- say we don't need to provide ID to vote. The vote is arguably more powerful than the gun on an individual level (many tyrannies are elected first, see Germany under Hilter, current Venezuela), so putting the two together, if we have the 4473 etc to buy a gun, then shouldn't we have something like that to vote?

Parma Armory does this too.

I'm with you folks. They need the info, there's no need for them to scan it. My Driver's License is my lifeblood, and I've been without before (not through wrongdoing, but clerical errors at the DMV). Let me tell you...not doing that again.

by chance I ran into the Store manager at an outside function a week or two back, I asked him about this policy and he said it had t do with prohibited persons shopping at the store. for ammo and whatnot. So it wasn't just to have a name with every order, it was to track who was making purchases. So that question has been answered.

I did let him know I didn't like the policy and they had lost my sale because of it..

So how do they know if the person making the purchase is a prohibited person? It is not like they are running a NICS check. Sounds like he was only telling a half truth... it was to track who was making purchases. Betting that the prohibited person bit was BS to make it sound legit.

I was interested to hear what his reason was, to let him know I disagreed with the collection of the info, and that they had lost a customer. I figured that was enough I wasn't going to debate him on the choices made. Not sure if it's his decision, the franchise owner, or their corporate overlords. I was wondering the same thing, I think it may be if the police come asking, he can easily pull up the electronic records, instead of spending hours trying to track down a sale, I didn't push for details.
