Steak 'n' Shake restaurants closing all over (?)

Post by Brian D. »

I found out about this early today, when I went to a S 'n' S for breakfast. Apparently the company is having big financial problems, and claim (according to signage on the doors) they are going to turn all the locations over to franchisees. But it doesn't sound like they have any potential franchisees lining up to do that. (I dug up a couple local stories online just now. Anybody got different/better info, please share it here.)

I was told by workers at a Burger King across the street that the Steak 'n' Shake managers had been told yesterday at 5pm, to shut down by 8pm, no previous notice. Not sure, but it sounds like they did this all over the region, and way beyond. This is a darned shame.
Quit worrying, hide your gun well, shut up, and CARRY that handgun!

We want to like SnS. Reasonable prices, decent tasting food.
Management and service have been another matter. On our last visit, I had to speculate if our waiter's (possible) drug use had conflicted with his work schedule.

I don't know about other ones, but the one on Lorain near Rt. 237 in Cleveland gets a lot of bad reviews, both regarding the food and the service.

They're listed as 24hr.s (or at least used to be) but when I was working at the Clinic, they were never open when I got off work between 12:00am and 2:00am. Apparently the people working there didn't feel like working late, despite their publicly advertised hours.

I haven't tried to eat there in years. There are too many better places I can go, even at 3:00am.

Oddly, outside of NE Ohio, on my rare visits, I've found them to have decent food and service.

A Steak ‘n Shake spokeswoman says store closings here and in other markets are temporary as the burger chain transitions from corporate-owned to franchise-operated restaurants.

When they first came around I ate there a few times, they were "OK".....went to one about a years ago and I will not be back....kind of a race to the bottom to offer an inexpensive meal out IMHO.

The one in Middletown used to be a favorite go-to for us but no more.

Last fall we went in and after I ordered they said "Sorry we don't have any premium Burgers" well Ok, how about Chili "Sorry we dont have any chili and also we don't have any cole slaw" Thank you I'll just take eat ketchup and hot sauce I guess.

Then about a month ago a friend posted a photo of their chicken tenders from there. They were raw, down to being bright red in center.

Not worth taking a chance any more for me.

As I recall, one of the reviews for the one at Kamm's Corners noted that during their visit, the formerly well regarded shake tasted like soap.

 If I want sliders,"Whitey Cass-ale" does just fine.

Side note, the "ex"(R.I.P.) was from New York state & had never been to White Castle. The only time we went to one,she tried to order hers without onions. I laughed & luaghed at her.

Unfortunately, not in Cleveland, unless you buy them frozen. Just not the same.

Never been a fan. Tried them once, didn't care for the food. Gave them a second try, and confirmed my first opinion. Still hate to see any business close the doors though, even if I don't personally care for them.
