The tendency of leaning away is, indeed, a balance thing. Pick something up, and hold it at arms length. You'll find yourself leaning away from the object I question. When instructing about stance I tell the student that recoil is like being given a shove backwards and sort of do a demonstration of same. First with the student in a straight up posture, then in a forward lean, so they understand which works better.
