My Carry didn't fire...

Post by carmen fovozzo »

I'm swapping out old for new ammo in my 9mm Shield...Dropped the mag and racked the slide..Checked the chamber
then pulled the trigger....NOTHING...Scared the living crap out of me...I carry this gun everyday....shook me up..

Can't figure out what the hell is wrong after field stripping it....put it back together and pulled the trigger,,,nothing again..

Now comes the part where OLD PEOPLE like me screw up....I have had this Shield a long time and I have never applied the safety....DUH
The safety was engaged.....
What a relief when I took the safety off.....Have no idea how it got engaged in the first place.

If I ever get a Shield, and I am tempted to try the Shield EZ, I will only get the one without a manual safety. Having failed to disengage a thumb safety once at a Fun & Gun I no longer carry anything that has one.

Yeah..Didn’t make one with out safety when I bought...
Was wondering if I can use something to make it harder to engage the safety ?

Maybe lock tight..

You can pick up Shields pretty cheaply, probably time to trade your safety model in for a non-safety model.

Don't have to be old to make this mistake. For a long time, I carried a 1911. While I love my 1911, I decided a while ago that I need more rounds, so I switched to a Glock 19. "Safety" to "No-Safety" is an easy change (worst case, I flick off a non-existent safety.) Going the other direction could create a problem, though, if that muscle memory isn't re-learned.

First gun I ever carried with safety. Might get me Glock 43 . I do carry now and then my G19. I need something for work that is easy to conceal. I also Have G 42 for pocket carry.

This is exactly why I tell my students that if they carry a gun with a safety to always train and practice disengaging the safety *even if you plan to carry it with safety off* because Morphy is real and that safety will become engaged when you least expect it - and need it to be off the most.

I ONLY carry handguns that either:
  1. HAVE to have a safety (M1911, BHP, etc)
  2. have no manual safety at all (Glock, revolver, etc)

I agree 100%. Back when I was still a serious shooter I ran a S&W 59 and a 1911 at the same time. The safeties are opposite of one another. I never had an issue but I think that was only because of the tempo of training. Still, it bothered me that the potential for error was always there. I decided to follow the pattern you describe. Now it's safety-down-off or none.

I do believe that trigger time eliminates these problems but why poke the bear?

TDA guns I carry with the safety off. The long trigger pull and FP block are pretty safe IMO.

NO SAFETY for this guy either one less thing to worry about in a panic situation regardless of age.
But just like different arguments about brands of guns your always going to have your fan boys & non fan boys.
So ultimately it comes down to what you're comfortable with.

I carry one Carmen, and they are nice ,(G43) !

I use a Vickers Tactical two round extention that gives me another two rounds and they give you a stronger spring to replace the stock one.

I have eight guns that I will carry from time to time, but the 43 is the one most carried these days
