That's about the only reason I can think of to not keep a gun loaded. I have a friend who has told the local fire department that if his house catches fire to just stay back and let it burn.

This is an excellent point. Only a loaded firearm, with one in the barrel, is dangerous.
Here's a SAMMI video where they burn crates of boxed ammo...no biggie.

Canned foods are messy and noisy when they pop off during a fire.
