People who buy and sell firearms in Ohio can now search through a statewide database to see whether the gun for sale was stolen.

The Ohio Stolen Guns Database contains the serial numbers of stolen guns "as reported to the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS) by law enforcement agencies throughout the state and authorized for release to the public."

It's the brainchild of Ohio Attorney General David Yost and a group of firearms dealers who wanted an easier way to determine whether a gun was stolen.

"...The Ohio Attorney General’s Office (AGO), LEADS and the reporting agencies strongly recommend that no citizen take any individual action based on this information. This information must be independently verified by law enforcement and is not to be used as a confirmation...

Then you don't buy it from the private seller, Just say no thanks and walk away.

Only input on the search form is for serial number of the firearm no name or anything else..

Do or have any gun manufacturers use similar blocks of numbers? For example say you have an Acme roadrunner hunting rifle and the serial number is 123456, is it possible some other gun manufacturer might possibly use the same number for their handguns?

Definitely possible.. not sure what is returned.. manufacturer and serial number ? does anyone have the S/N of a gun that was stolen ? were any ever posted here in the forum ? Why yes there was...

so that serial number returns THIS RESULT with Serial Number, Make, Caliber, Type, Reporting Agency, Reporting Agency Phone. Along with the following notice.
CAUTION: The serial number entered may be associated with a weapon that is reported stolen. Contact local law enforcement immediately. Do not confront any individuals in connection to the weapon in question.
So now we know.

Does the technology exist to track what website I (via my IP address)go to and know what data I'd entered into/onto said website?

Of course that technology exists, just like they can monitor this site, your web browsing habits, your CC purchases, your retail shopping. 1984 just arrived several decades later than predicted.
you can always use a VPN or anonymizer service.

Or a computer at the library, or have the seller run the numbers on his phone, and so on.
