Regarding what was in letter, the real reason Best Buy changed their mind was probably bad press.

I would image bad press also. But Best Buy probably feels they are safe from any liability since it was not related to any theft pertaining to their store and it was a good deed on their employee's part.

And, had he been injured, they would probably have been safe from the workers comp claim, though California has some weird laws in that regard.
