Greetings from Columubs

Post by tacticalpanda »

Hi All,

New to the forum and to Ohio. I just took a job and will be moving from the People Republic of Massachusetts to Columbus. Not sure which part yet but will hopefully find a house in the next few months. Just wanted to stop in and say HI. I am regretting not getting my Utah license as I won't be able to carry for probably 6 months now.

Even if you don't have a license that Ohio recognizes, you won't have to wait 6 months. You can take an Ohio class as soon as you like, and after you've been a resident for 45 days you can apply. Depending on which sheriff's office you use (you can apply in your county of residence or any bordering county), you could get your license within days. It all depends on how long the background checks take but I'd imagine you could have your license by the two month mark after moving here.

Oh yeah, and welcome to Ohio and OFCC!

Depending on when you move here, you may not need to wait the 45 days. Effective March 23, 2015 - the 45 day state and 30 day county residency requirements in Ohio are gone. It is only required that you are a US resident.

Also, effective at the same time (3/23/2015) are non-resident licenses for persons living in another state but working in Ohio.

Welcome to Columbus! There are a few of us on here in the Columbus area.

And when you do complete the class, call around. You can get the license in your county or one adjacent. Delaware county was running 3 months out and Licking was only 1 so I went over there.

Thanks for the welcome. Good news on the licensing. It took me 110 days in MA to get mine. The hardest part is going to be waiting until I get residency. I have a shopping list of things a mile long that we aren't allowed to have in MA.

Right now we are looking at living in Pickerington, New Albany, or Dublin. Possibly Bexely. We change everyday.

I like Bexley, and have friends there. Police response time averages about 3 minutes. Lots of smart people reside there. Bexley is the site of the Ohio governor's official mansion.

Your MA license will be recognized in Ohio effective March 23rd.

The Franklin County Sheriff's office has a well-deserved reputation for issuing licenses within 24 hours. When you schedule your class, also schedule your appointment with FCSO for the following day or thereafter because there can be a wait for appointments.

Depending upon where you are working, don't overlook Upper Arlington if you have kids. Upper Arlington and Bexley have the two best school systems in Central Ohio and have consistently done so for over 50 years. Also, both are easy commutes to just about anywhere.

By the way, there is another panda in these forums . . . a kung fu panda ... you should say hello to TSiWRX. :P :P

Welcome to the forum!
It looks like you are considering nice suburbs around the city proper. I liked Grandview Heights.

Wow you guys are full of good news. Nice to see my license will be good in OH soon. I think I will feel naked for the month not being able to carry. It's going to be hard due to buying a house so I'll be in temp housing for 60 days and my wife won't be down to join me until May. So i'm hoping to be into a house by May and then get residency so I can get my license and actually buy some firearms. At least I'll be able to save for all the fun stuff that they think is to dangerous for us in MA.

Right now I'm working in Reynolsburg. We are looking to live on the East side of the city most likely. Going to do a tour of the city with my realestate agent when I get there. We also added westerville and Gahanna to the list. She also recommend granville but it might be to far outside the city for my wifes job.

Welcome to the Buckeye state! One piece of advice that was bestowed upon me (when it was discovered that we were looking to purchase a house) when my wife and I moved to Columbus from Youngstown is to focus your search outside of the 270 ring. If you look at a map of the city, you'll see that interstate 270 does a full circle around Columbus. When we moved here in 2011, a friend of mine with some local experience said that if we were planning to stay for a significant amount of time, purchasing a home, etc., we should do so outside of the 270 circle. Sure, there are some fantastic communities and neighborhoods in greater Columbus (UA, Bexley, MInerva Park, and Worthington come to mind), but take a look at the Columbus Dispatch's Crime and Safety map for greater Columbus and you'll see what he was talking about.
