Ohio’s gun lobby groups: same goal, different tactics

Gun rights groups have a long record of success in Ohio. Many cheered another victory last week when House Bill 178, which would do away with the need for a concealed-carry permit and training, cleared the House Federalism Committee and moved closer to a vote on the House floor.

But the way we got here highlights differences within the gun lobby.

The goals of each group in the gun lobby don’t conflict. They all want to see House Bill 178 passed. Each also wants to see passage of a Stand Your Ground Law, which would remove Ohioans’ current legal duty to back away from a confrontation if possible.

However, each group also has its own way of lobbying, which sometimes creates conflicts. The contrast in their actions in promoting “constitutional carry” legislation illustrates the differences.
